Panthers Fall to South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – Holden Phelps put together a strong start on the mound, but the Pitt baseball team (7-6) ultimately fell to South Florida (4-9), 2-1, on Tuesday night at the USF Baseball Stadium.
In his second start as a Panther, Phelps struck out a season-high seven over 5.2 innings of work. He retired the first 14 batters he faced and 16 of the first 17 before running into a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning. He gave way to Quin Konuszewski, who got a strikeout to end the inning. Matthew Fernandez then gave Pitt two scoreless innings of relief, permitting just one hit and one walk.
The Panthers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Noah Martinez homered to right center for his team leading sixth round tripper of the year in the top of the first.
Phelps was in command through the first five frames and did not allow a base runner until giving up a hit with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Unfortunately for Phelps and the Panthers, the margin for error was slim in the low scoring affair as the Bulls took a 2-1 lead on two hits, a hit by pitch and a squeeze play in the sixth.
The seventh inning saw Pitt put the tying run on base when Tommy Tavarez was hit by a pitch, but the Panthers could not cash in.
Fernandez kept it a one-run deficit for Pitt in the home half of the seventh by working out of a two-on, nobody out jam. The Bulls threatened to add on again in the eighth, putting two on with one out, but Fernandez forced them to strand a pair again.
Pitt attempted to mount a final comeback push in the ninth. Jack Anderson led off with a single to center. A fielder's choice allowed Kyle Hess to reach base safely, and he moved to second on a ground out. That's as close as the Panthers got to tying it, though, as the game ended with a strikeout.
Anderson led Pitt at the plate, accounting for two of the team's six hits with a pair of singles. CJ Funk finished with a double.
