LOUISVILLE, KY – Despite outscoring Louisville in the second half, Pitt Lacrosse lost their ACC road opener to the Cardinals 12-9 Sunday afternoon.
In a game filled with scoring runs, the Panthers got off to the quick 2-0 start with unassisted goals by Camdyn O'Donnell and Sydney Naylor. Louisville struck back in less than three total minutes with three goals of their own to take the lead. However, Pitt finished the first period strong with two more goals, this time thanks to Maeve Murray and another from O'Donnell.
The second quarter ultimately proved to be the difference, as Louisville scored the only five goals in the fifteen minutes and established an eight to four lead heading to halftime.
The next fifteen minutes only saw two goals scored, one from each side including an Ava Washington drive to the net that ended in a Panther goal.
Similar to the start of the game, the final period of play saw Pitt come out hot. The team in blue scored four goals and controlled much of the possession, leading to a clear momentum shift. Emily Coughlin scored her only goal of the game, while Washington put a second past the goalie and Naylor recorded a hat trick with two more tallies. Following the run, the Panthers had multiple opportunities to take the lead but were unable to and Louisville capitalized. The Cardinals ended the game on a three to zero run and that proved to be the difference at Cardinal Stadium.
For the Panthers defensively, goalie Hannah Van Middelem stopped five Cardinal shots and six different Pitt players caused a turnover. Pitt won the draw control game, behind four from Jill Fenech and three by Ava Sumwalt plus six from four other Panthers.
Louisville was led offensively by Nicole Perroni and Hannah Morris, who both secured hat tricks on the day. Goalie Sara Addeche made nine saves in net and Perroni added three caused turnovers to add to her all-around performance.
Pitt gets six days off before traveling to Blacksburg next weekend for another road ACC contest, this time with Virginia Tech.
