BLACKSBURG, VA – The Pitt women's lacrosse team fell to 0-3 in the ACC, after a tough road contest with the Virginia Tech Hokies at Thompson Field Saturday afternoon. Virginia Tech came out on top 19-6 in Blacksburg to secure their first conference win of 2023.
After starting strong the last two games, the Panthers struggled out of the gates and saw the Hokies build a 5-2 lead after one period of play. Molly Carter and Maeve Murray scored the early goals for the Panthers to keep the game within three.
The second quarter was more of the same, as Tech scored six goals to Pitt's one (Camdyn O'Donnell).
Pitt did fair slightly better in the third, scoring two to the Hokies' one, off the sticks of Sydney Naylor and Talia Zuco. The two goals wasn't enough to chip away at the VT lead and the Hokies scored the first five goals of the final frame to put the game out of reach before a Madigan Lublin score late in the fourth.
Olivia Vergano (4 G, 4 A) and Claire Schotta (4 G, 2 A) led the way for Virginia Tech offensively and goalie Jocelyn Torres made as many saves in the net as the number of goals she allowed.
Hannah Van Middelem and Molly Cain combined for nine Panther saves and Jill Fenech recorded four draw controls on the day.
Pitt has a quick turnaround as they host Liberty Tuesday at Highmark Stadium, kicking off a five-game homestand. First draw is set for 4 p.m. and admission is free for all fans.
