
Panthers Power Past Notre Dame, 8-5

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Panthers snapped an eight-game losing skid with an 8-5 victory over Notre Dame at Melissa Cook Stadium, Friday afternoon. Pitt totaled 11 hits with two home runs en route to its first conference win and improved to 15-14 on the season.
Yvonne Whaley was a menace at the plate and in the field, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles and six assists. The Houston, Texas product helped retire the side in the bottom of the sixth inning, having a hand in all three outs.
Adriana Romano got the start in the circle, tossing 1.0 inning for the Panthers. Notre Dame struck first after scoring on a sac fly early in the first inning. The Panthers answered with back-to-back singles and took advantage of two errors from the Fighting Irish to take a 3-1 lead.
The game continued to go back-and-forth as the Fighting Irish came out swinging in the second inning, hitting back-to-back homers to tie the game at 3-3. Sarah Seamans (2-for-4) hit a go-ahead home run to left center to put the Panthers up 4-3.
Abby Edwards entered the circle and anchored the Panthers to get three straight outs. Edwards retired five of the first six batters faced before giving up two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Pitt and Notre Dame were both held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings before Cami Compson (1-for-4) added insurance runs with a two-run blast off the scoreboard to secure the 8-5 victory for the Panthers.
Dani Drogemuller came in and closed for the Panthers and earned her second save of the season after retiring all nine batters faced.

The Panthers will continue the series against the Fighting Irish with a doubleheader Sunday, April 2. Saturday's matchup has been moved due to low temperatures. Game times for Sunday will be announced at a later time.

NOTES
- Yvonne Whaley extended her hitting streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 15 games. The hitting streak and on-base streak are both the longest streaks by a Panther this season.
- Sarah Seamans hit a team-leading seventh home run this season. Five of her seven home runs this season have either been game-tying or go-ahead home runs.
- The win marked the first victory over the Fighting Irish since Pitt stunned Notre Dame, 8-1, in the quarterfinals of the 2015 ACC Softball Championship in Blacksburg, Va.
