PITTSBURGH – Pitt got back in the win column in their final nonference matchup of the season, defeating the Youngstown State Penguins 13-9 at Highmark Stadium Tuesday.
The Panthers got off to a strong start in the first quarter, with goals from Jill Fenech, Jenna Hendrickson, Dylana Williams and Emily Coughlin. The Penguins kept it close with goals from Ali Korin and Abby Yesko, but the first quarter lead for the blue and gold would not be relinquished.
The second only saw three goals scored including another from Hendrickson and one from Camdyn O'Donnell. Youngstown State leading scorer Natalie Calandra-Ryan put her 28th of the season into the back of the net to limit the Pitt lead to three at halftime.
In the third quarter, Ava Washington buried a bullet into the upper corner of the net before two more Penguin goals were scored. The remaining of 11 minutes of the period put the game ultimately out of touch thanks to another score from Fenech, plus two from Sydney Naylor and one out of the stick of Madigan Lublin.
Fenech registered her first career hat trick when she opened the fourth quarter scoring and O'Donnell followed it up with her second of the day and 17th on the season. Youngstown State did score the final four goals of the game to trim the lead from eight to four.
Naylor and O'Donnell finished Tuesday's game tied for the team lead in goals with 17. Goalies Hannah Van Middelem and Molly Cain combined to make two saves in net.
Fenech put in an all around performance, with five draw controls, four caused turnovers and five ground balls to compliment the hat trick.
