PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team got off to a hot start but could not overcome Virginia's offense as the Panthers fell in the series finale, 8-5, at Vartabedian Field early Sunday afternoon. The Panthers drop to 14-14 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.
Graduate student Yvonne Whaley led the Panthers, going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, two runs scored, and three RBI. Haylie Brunson (1-for-4), Sarah Seamans (1-for-3, 2B), Rachael Fuerst (1-for-3) and Macy Hamilton (1-for-3) all picked up a hit for the Panthers.
It was a close game at the start as the Cavaliers took an early lead with a two-run home run in the first inning, as the Panthers answered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning. Whaley hit a leadoff single to start the rally, followed by Brunson's deep single to right field. Whaley eventually scored on a wild pitch before Seamans hit a clutch double to tie the score at 2-2.
Virginia continued to have strong offense, totaling five home runs on the day. The Cavaliers scored three runs in the second inning with back-to-back homers from Gabby Baylog and Jade Hylton. The Cavaliers hit back-to-back homers again in the fifth inning to increase their lead 7-2.
Pitt's bats were halted after the first inning until Whaley hit a three-run home run to left center field in the bottom of the seventh to lessen the deficit, 8-5.
Graduate student Abby Edwards suffered the loss while Courtney Lane earned the win in the circle for the Cavaliers. Lane entered the game in the bottom of the second, allowing three runs on three hits in 6.0 innings.
