MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team placed its second athlete and first relay to earn an Honorable Mention All-American status on the third day of NCAA Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, Friday evening.
"Tonight was an incredible moment for our team," said head coach Chase Kreitler. "Our 400 Medley Relay was the first Pitt relay to score at NCAAs since 2002! Not only did we score, our team put together fantastic relay splits. We talked all year about peaking mentally and physically at NCAAs and these guys did it. They smashed the team record they set at ACCs by a second and took almost 3 seconds off the team record we started the season with. It was truly a special moment celebrating with these guys after we found out we got 16th."
"This is just the start of where we want to go as a program, but we're celebrating every step along the way. To have twelve guys at this meet, the most Pitt has ever had, and to have individuals and relays scoring is awesome."
The men's 400 medley relay comprised of Krzysztof Radziszewski, Cooper van der Laan, Marcin Goraj, and Dominic Toldeo finished 16th overall and broke their own school record with a time of 3:05.72 – earning an Honorable Mention All-American status. This is the first Pitt relay to score since 2002.
Senior Cooper van der Laan secured an Honorable Mention All-American status after placing 16th overall in the 100 breast finals with his time of 51.72. van der Laan tops his time from last year's NCAAs where he posted a 52.17.
Two Panthers secured their best times in the preliminary rounds this afternoon. Senior Adam Mahler posted a 46.50 in the 100 fly with junior Marcin Goraj finishing with a time of 46.50 in the 100 back.
In the preliminary round of the 3-meter diving competition, freshman Juan Osorio Mendoza secured a 279.90 with sophomore Cameron Cash not far behind with his score of 272.20.
Also competing in the prelims today, senior Flynn Crisci finished with a time of 52.18 in the 100 breast and sophomore Krzyszstof Radziszewski posted a 46.08 in the 100 back.
