Panthers Close Weekend with Sweeps over Akron, Miami (OH)

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving team closed out the weekend with a sweep over Akron and Miami (OH), highlighted by four first-place finishes in diving and 15 wins in the pool.
The Panthers improve to 6-1 on the women's side and 4-1 on the men's.
On the boards, Pitt's Jocelyn Brooks led a sweep of the top three spots in the women's 3-meter diving with 303.95 points, followed by Mariana Osorio Mendoza (300.30) and Jess Vega (300.20). Ayla Debowsky captured the 1-meter title with 289.30 points. On the men's side, Chase Marafioto earned first in the 1-meter dive with 320.35 points, while Noah Bernard set a pool record in the 3-meter with 395.20 points.
In the pool, Emily Bucaro opened the day with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, posting a lifetime best of 9:56.82. Avery Kudlac earned two victories in the women's 200-yard freestyle (1:46.71) and 100-yard freestyle (49.05). Sydney Gring claimed three wins, topping the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.32), 100-yard butterfly (51.95) and 200-yard IM (1:57.48). Claire Jansen added two wins in the 100-yard backstroke (52.29) and 200-yard backstroke (1:53.65), while Angelina Messina finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a lifetime best of 1:01.90.
On the men's side, Julian Koch claimed victories in the 200-yard freestyle (1:35.41) and the 100-yard butterfly (45.43), setting a pool record and lifetime best in the latter. Mason Leach won both the 100-yard backstroke (47.07) and 200-yard backstroke (1:44.47, lifetime best), while Alan Vergine set a pool record in the 200-yard butterfly (1:42.87). James Allison also notched a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (43.97). The Panthers took second and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle, led by Cy Zhang (9:15.72) and Drew Henry (9:18.45, lifetime best). Patrizio Costanza posted two lifetime bests in the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.30) and 500-yard freestyle (4:24.74). Pitt's men rounded out the day with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:26.98).
