Fourth Quarter Lifts Liberty Over Pitt
3/14/2023 7:52:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
PITTSBURGH, PA – Pitt lacrosse was unable to overcome a fourth quarter surge from Liberty and fell in the Tuesday contest, 13-7 at Highmark Stadium.
The Panthers entered the last fifteen minute period down by only one goal, but five Flames' goals proved to be the difference and put the game out of hand.
The first half was a back and forth affair, with five different Panthers contributing the five goals that kept the score tied going into the break. Ava Sumwalt, Emily Coughlin, Jenna Hendrickson, Ava Washington and Dylana Williams each tallied a score in the opening 30 minutes.
However, the offense stalled in the second half, as goals by Hendrickson and Camdyn O'Donnell were the only the Pitt attack could muster against eight by Liberty.
Sumwalt caused three turnovers to lead the Panthers and four different Pitt players secured three ground balls a piece (Jill Fenech, Natalie Voorhees, Hannah Van Middelem & Washington), but it was not enough to keep the game tight down the stretch.
For Liberty, Cami Merkel (3 G, 3 A) and Jordan Sheive (4 G, 2 A) recorded six point outings to jumpstart the Flames' offense and their two goalies combined to make four saves.
Pitt will remain home for the next contest, as ACC foe #10 Virginia will be at Highmark Stadium Saturday for a 12 p.m. first draw.
