
Panthers Drop Championship Game to No. 23 Mizzou, 6-4

MIAMI – Pitt advanced to the championship game at the FIU Panther Invitational, but ultimately fell to No. 23 Missouri, 6-4, at Felsburg Field at the FIU Softball Stadium Sunday morning. The Panthers finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and fell to 6-3 overall on the season.
Sophomore Kylie Griggs (3-for-3) and graduate student Yvonne Whaley (2-for-3) each recorded multi-hit efforts to lead the Panther offense. Griggs finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases.
Abby Edwards (2-1) held the Tigers to just one run and two hits through four innings before giving up two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Edwards finished the day tossing 4.1 innings while allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Tigers got on the board early with a first pitch home run to left center from Alex Honnold. Edwards retired the next two batters with a groundout and a strikeout to end the opening inning.
Pitt's bats were hot to begin the second inning as junior Cami Compson hit a leadoff double to begin a four-run rally. Kayla Lane hit a sac bunt to advance Compson to third while Griggs drove Compson home on an RBI single through the right side to even the score 1-1. Whaley hit a first pitch double to score Griggs before Bailey Drapola capped off the rally with a two-run homer to left field, increasing the Panthers' lead to 4-1.
Pitt and Mizzou both did not score for the next two innings, but a four-run fifth inning propelled the Tigers past the Panthers. Honnold hit a two RBI double to bring the Tigers within one run and stole third base on a wild pitch from Kendall Brown. Honnold scored on a Pitt error while Julia Crenshaw scored on a wild pitch after reaching base from a hit by pitch. Mizzou scored one more run in the sixth inning to end the game with a 6-4 final score.
Honnold led the Tigers going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Laurin Grings earned the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings of work.

The Panthers travel to Houston, Texas for the University of Houston Tournament, Feb. 24-26. Pitt will play Houston Christian, Sam Houston, Houston and Illinois over the three-day tournament. The Panthers open the tournament Friday with a double-header against Houston Christian (11 a.m. ET) and Sam Houston (1:30 p.m. ET).

- The Panthers went 3-2 in the FIU Tournament, with both losses coming against nationally recognized Missouri. Mizzou received votes in the NFCA/USA Today rankings and is currently ranked No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Softball poll. Pitt fell to 1-2 on the season against ranked opponents.
- In three games since returning from injury, shortstop Yvonne Whaley is batting .727 (8-for-11) with five RBI, three runs scored and three doubles.
- Sarah Seamans, Bailey Drapola and Kylie Griggs have reached base in each of the Panthers' nine games this season.
- Kat Rodriguez leads the team with nine RBI and with five doubles. Five of Rodriguez's nine hits this season have gone four doubles.
