Pitt Posts Two Wins During Day One of Houston Tournament

Panthers Defeat Houston Christian, 11-7, and Sam Houston, 2-1
Graduate student Yvonne Whaley led the Panthers for the day, batting .500 (3-for-6) with two runs scored and three walks. Whaley is now batting .647 (11-for-17) with a .700 on-base percentage in five games this season. Graduate student Sarah Seamans and junior Cami Compson each went 3-for-7 on the day to help lead the Panthers to victory.
Pitt 11, Houston Christian 8
The Panthers struck first, scoring three runs in the opening inning. Whaley hit a leadoff double and eventually reached home on a Seamans' RBI single to center field. Pitt took advantage of two HCU errors, scoring two more runs before ending the top of the first.
The Huskies answered by scoring two runs in the second before Pitt put up a four-run third inning to extend their lead 7-2. Seamans got the rally started with a single, followed by a stolen base and then reached third on a pass ball. Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez (2-for-5, 2 RBI) hit an RBI single, and Kat Rodriguez (2-for-7, 4 R) reached first on an error. Compson capped off the inning with a hit a three-run homer to center field.
Houston Christian scored in each of the remaining four frames but could not overcome the deficit as the Panthers held onto the lead for the 11-8 win.
Pitt 2, Sam Houston 1
Redshirt-sophomore Dani Drogemuller took the circle in a pitcher's duel for the second game of the day. Drogemuller (3-2) earned the win in a 7.0 inning outing, marking her fourth complete game and third complete game win of the season. The Frankfort, Ill., native allowed one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Panthers scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. The first came off a Compson double down the right field line while the second came on a throwing error on Bailey Drapola's sacrifice RBI.

The Panthers continue the University of Houston Tournament with two games on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Sam Houston (10 a.m. CT / 11 a.m. ET) and Houston (5:30 p.m. / 6:30 p.m.). Pitt will wrap up the weekend with a single game against Illinois Sunday, Feb. 26 (10 a.m. / 11 a.m. ET).
