Pitt produces undefeated season at home

PITTSBURGH – The No. 20 Pitt women's soccer team (13-4-1, 6-3-1) closed out their regular season schedule with a 2-1 win against the Virginia Tech Hokies (7-8-3, 4-6-0), Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. This win broke the Pitt women's soccer record for most wins against ACC opponents in program history.

The Panthers produced an unbeaten record at Ambrose Urbanic Field after securing their first home win against the Hokies in program history.

Starting the evening off strong, the Panthers posted four shots in the first 16 minutes – setting the scene for the evening's contest.

At the 17^th minute, Landy Mertz put Pitt on the board first after a double assist from Amanda West and Keera Melenhorst.

Pitt continued to dominate the field in the first half – posting a total of 12 shots with six on target. The Panthers were able to hold 62% of the possession in the first 45-minutes of play and headed into the locker room up 1-0.

Coming back after the halftime, the Panthers were ready to finish the ACC battle.

Sophomore Katie Zailski posted an incredible team save at the net in the 62^nd minute – keeping the Hokies still scoreless.

Samiah Phiri was able to double the Panther's lead in the 75^th minute of play – finding a opening in the back of the net off of Ellie Coffield's assist.

Just under 10 minutes later, Virginia Tech was able to secure their only goal of the night.

Pitt didn't just dominate tonight's game in points. The Panthers held the edge in shots (23-17), shots on goal (9-4), and corner kicks (10-6).

The Panthers will head down to Chapel Hill, NC where they will meet North Carolina in the first round of the 2023 Ally ACC Women's Soccer Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 29. This postseason matchup will air live on the ACC Network and will kick off at 8 PM.
