
Pitt Places Four on All-ACC Academic Team

PITTSBURGH – Four Pitt Panthers – Billy Corcoran, Matt Gilbertson, Pitt, Baron Stuart, Pitt, Jeffrey Wehler –named to the 2022 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by the league office Monday. All four players were named to the team for the first time in their careers.
Corcoran has a strong season on the mound posting a 7-5 record with a 4.43 ERA. He ranked among the ACC leaders in fewest walks allowed (1st - 8), innings pitched (8th - 85.1) and wins (T-8th - 7). He was also tied for third in NCAA in walks allowed per nine innings (0.84) and fifth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.62). Corcoran was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week on April 25, earning the honors with a win at No. 4 Miami on April 24 in which he had eight strikeouts, one walk and one run in seven innings.
Gilbertson is coming off an outstanding season as the Panthers No. 1 starter. He posted a team-best 9-3 record, including four wins over nationally ranked opponents (No. 5 Virginia, No. 5 Louisville, No. 7 Georgia Tech and No. 20 Clemson), while also leading the team in ERA (3.74), WHIP (1.17), starts (15), innings pitched (96.1) and strikeouts (88). The Henderson, Nevada, native ranked among the national leaders in walks allowed per nine innings (8th - 1.03) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (12th – 7.91). He also ranked among the ACC leaders in wins (T-3rd – 9), innings pitched (4th – 96.1), innings per game (1st – 6.42), games started (T-8th – 15), strikeouts (T-8th – 88), strikeouts looking (2nd – 37), walks allowed (T-2nd – 11), shutouts (T-1st – 1) and complete games (T-1st – 1).
Stuart established himself as one of Pitt's top arms out of the bullpen leading the team in saves (7) and appearances (27). He recorded 61 strikeouts in 47 innings pitch on the season.
Wehler, a transfer from Youngstown State, made an immediate impact in his first year with the Panthers finishing third on the team with a .294 batting average, while leading the squad in runs (48), doubles (17) and stolen bases (10).
Georgia Tech first baseman Andrew Jenkins was also recognized as the ACC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year after starting all 60 games at first base for the Yellow Jackets, batting .381 with 22 doubles, one triple and 17 home runs with 70 RBI. The Atlanta native tied for second in the conference with 96 hits. He also ranked second in the ACC in batting average and was third in both runs scored (71) and doubles (22) while earning first-team All-ACC and multiple All-America team honors. In the classroom, Jenkins earned second-team CoSIDA Academic Team honors after earning a 3.79 grade-point average in his third year in the business administration program at Georgia Tech.
A total of 27 student-athletes who earned All-ACC honors this season also secured spots on the academic team, highlighted by first-team honorees Max Wagner of Clemson, Jenkins and Kevin Parada of Georgia Tech, Andrew Walters of Miami, John Michael Bertrand of Notre Dame, Alex Tappen of Virginia, Drue Hackenberg and Jack Hurley of Virginia Tech and Rhett Lowder of Wake Forest.
Additionally, seven student-athletes on the All-ACC Freshman Team earned All-ACC Academic Team honors. The team also includes two CoSIDA Academic All-America selections and five student-athletes who were named CoSIDA Academic All-District.
All 14 ACC baseball programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team. College World Series participant Notre Dame led all schools with eight selections, and Louisville placed seven on the squad.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be announced this Friday.
