PITTSBURGH – Pitt baseball (27-24, 13-14) fell 8-7 to Georgia Tech (31-21, 13-15) Thursday night at Charles L. Cost Field. After the Panthers scored seven consecutive runs to tie the game, the Yellow Jackets secured the victory with a go-ahead solo homer with two outs in the ninth inning.

Georgia Tech jumped out to the big lead with six runs in the first inning and added a solo homer in the third inning.

The Panthers got on the board in the bottom of the inning. CJ Funk led off with a triple to right field, and Brock Franks knocked him in a double to right field.

Pitt cut its deficit to one in the fifth inning. The bases were loaded with no outs after Dom Popa reached on a throwing error from the second baseman and Jeffrey Wehler and Tatem Levins walked. Sky Duff knocked in both Popa and Wehler with a single through the right side. Ron Washington, Jr. loaded the bases again with a walk. With one out, Levins raced home to score on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded a third time from a Jack Anderson walk, Funk hit a two-RBI double to right center.

Levins tied it up with a leadoff homer to right field in the eighth inning, his team-leading 15th homer of the year.

The second game of the series is Friday at 6 p.m.

NOTES

Matt Gilbertson started and went six innings with seven runs, nine hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
Gilbertson recorded his eighth start without a walk this season.
He moved to in program history 15th in career innings pitched (200.1) ahead of Ronnie Moog (1955-57) and for a single-season tied for 10th in strikeouts (87) with P.J. Hiser (2002) and tied for 14th in starts (14).
Brady Devereux followed with two scoreless innings of relief with two hits, no walks and one strikeout.
Duff extended his reached-base streak to 65 games with three singles.
Funk reached base a team-high four times, finishing a homer shy of the cycle in addition to a walk.
Levins is tied with Connor Perry (2019) and David Chestero (2010) for the ninth-most homers and tied with John Shultz (2010) for the 20th-most RBI (48) in a single-season by a Panther.
Funk tied Duff (2019) and several others for the ninth-most walks (40).
In program history, Ron Washington, Jr. moved into a tie for eighth place in career starts (189) with Scott Folmar (2000-03) and 13th in career walks (85) ahead of Ben Copeland (2003-05) and Sam Crowley (1993-97).
