Pitt Drops Road Contest at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, PA – Pitt could not overcome a slow start and turnover issues against an aggressive, trapping Penn State team in a 15-7 road loss Tuesday afternoon at Panzer Stadium. The Panthers committed 18 turnovers and faced an opponent season-high 42 shots in the loss.
Paulina DiFatta recorded 12 saves and a team-high four ground balls but the Panthers were unable to overcome Penn State's pressure. The Nittany Lions scored six free position goals in the game, including four during a decisive second quarter run.
Penn State got off to a fast start as Kristin O'Neil found the back of the net twice in the opening 3:31 of play before Pitt responded in the opening quarter. Emily Coughlin opened the scoring for Pitt with her seventh goal at the 10:31 mark and Madisyn Kittell found freshman Sydney Naylor for a goal less than 45 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2.
The Panthers grabbed a 3-2 lead on a Julia Foster goal at the 7:42 mark, but Penn State countered with seven consecutive goals over an 11-minute span of the first and second quarters to grab a 9-3 lead.
Paige Petty scored on a woman-up, free position attempt at the 3:41 mark to stop the run and extend her consecutive games with a point and consecutive games with a goal streak to 76 and 43, respectively. Penn State added goals with 1:36 and 1:01 remaining in the half before Maureen McNierney scored with 18 seconds remaining to send the Panthers into the half trailing 11-5.
Penn State tacked on three more goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to 14-5.
Pitt outscored the Nittany Lions, 2-1, in the fourth quarter as Kate Elam scored her 22nd goal of the season off a pass from Carlie Leach and Dylana Williams scored off a free position attempt.
The Panthers are now 7-8 on the season, including an 0-5 mark in road contests. Pitt returns to action Saturday, April 16 at Notre Dame in their final ACC regular season contest.
