SOUTH BEND, IN – After a competitive first quarter, the Panthers were unable to match Notre Dame's offense in a 19-7 loss on the road at Arlotta Stadium Saturday afternoon. Pitt was outshot 36-18 and had three more turnovers than Notre Dame's nine.
Paulina DiFatta stopped nine shots and Paige Petty scored three goals for the seventh time this season. The Fighting Irish won the critical draw control battle, 19-10, and had two times as many free position shots as the Panthers (12 to six).
Notre Dame scored two goals within the first three minutes of the game thanks to Madison Ahern's 40th and Madison Mote's 17th, but the Panthers responded multiple times in a back and forth first quarter. Petty scored her first at the 9:48 mark and Kate Elam, Karina Latsko and Carlie Leach each added a goal of their own to keep the deficit to only two after fifteen minutes of play.
The Fighting Irish outscored the Panthers over the next 30 minutes 11-2 to put the game essentially out of reach after three quarters. Leach and Petty scored the lone goals for Pitt in the second and third quarters. The second of Petty's goals was from the free position and tied her with Head Coach Emily Boissonneault for career goals at 242 (29th all-time).
Petty also scored the only goal of the fourth quarter for Pitt to move her past her coach and into a tie for 28th place on the career goals list with 243.
Notre Dame outscored the Panthers 2-1 in the fourth as they did in each previous quarter. Pitt did win two draw controls to Notre Dame's one in the fourth, but that was not enough to make up the goal difference that had already been established to that point in the game.
The Panthers are now 7-9 on the season, including an 0-6 mark in road contests. Pitt plays one remaining regular season game as they host George Mason Tuesday, April 19 at Highmark Stadium.
