Pitt Upsets No. 3/3 Florida State in Series Finale

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Pitt softball team bounced back from two previous losses in the series with a historical win Sunday, defeating No. 3/3 Florida State 7-5 at JoAnne Graf Field.

The Panthers responded with the first of its three home runs in the second inning as Lane hit a two-run home run over the left field foul pole. Compson hit a two-run homer of her own the following inning, scoring freshman Haylie Brunson and putting Pitt ahead 5-4. Through three innings of play in Tallahassee, both teams combined for nine runs and nine hits.
The Seminoles tied the contest up at 5-5 with an RBI double to left in the bottom of the fifth, their first run since the first inning. After the first inning, Drogemuller limited Florida State to two hits until the RBI double.
The Panthers again used their strength to regain the lead as Pavlick hit a home run to left field, just clearing the wall as Pitt led 7-5. Florida State left a runner on first base in the sixth inning and got a runner on first via a walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Drogemulller fielded a ground ball and recorded the last out at first base, sealing the victory.
Both Compson and Pavlick finished 2-for-3 with a home run, double and two RBI. It was the third game with two or more home runs and second game with three home runs this season.
Pitt concludes its five-week road trip in the Lady Bison Classic in Nashville, Tenn., Friday, Mar. 11 through Sunday, Mar. 13. First game is Friday versus Bowling Green at 3:30 p.m.
NEWS & NOTES
- The victory is the highest-ranked win in program history. The previous high – No. 6/9 Florida State, 6-5, May 7, 2021.
- Of the eight hits the Panthers recorded, seven were extra base hits, including three home runs. Kayla Lane, Cami Compson and Katlyn Pavlick all homered.
- Redshirt freshman Dani Drogemuller went the distance for her sixth win of the season (6-3). She allowed five hits, one earned run and struck out three.
- After trailing 4-1 after the first inning, the Panthers outscored the Seminoles 6-1 and outhit them 7-3.
- The loss was Florida State's first of the season (19-1, 2-1 ACC). The win was Pitt's first conference victory of the year (9-7, 1-2 ACC).
