
Copperwheat Awarded Rookie of the Year at 2022 EAGL Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Pitt freshman Hallie Copperwheat was awarded Rookie of the Year at the 2022 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship hosted by George Washington Saturday.
Throughout this season Copperwheat earned the third highest all-around score in program history (39.500), has garnered seven individual titles – the most of anyone on the team, and was only the second freshman in Pitt history to be named EAGL Gymnast of the Week after her impressive all-around win. Copperwheat is the fifth Pitt gymnast to earn the Rookie of the Year title.
Senior Katie Chamberlain tied for the conference runner-up on bars with a score of 9.900, her fourth bars score of a 9.900 or higher this season.
As a team, Pitt placed eighth overall with a score of 193.575. Host George Washington earned the team title with a 196.325.
FLOOR
The first rotation was highlighted by Copperwheat's team-high 9.850. Junior Erin Hutchison earned a 9.775, freshman Jordyn Ewing recorded a 9.800, and freshman Sidney Washington recorded a 9.750. The Panthers combined for a team score of 48.475 to kick off the afternoon.
VAULT
Chamberlain and Washington both recorded 9.800s on vault to tie for the team's highest score of the event. Junior Ciara Ward earned a 9.725 and Copperwheat picked up a 9.700. The team's 48.650 gave the Panthers a running score of 97.125 at the halfway mark.
BARS
Bars was the best event for the Panthers, with all six gymnasts crossing the 9.800 threshold. Chamberlain earned her fourth bars score of a 9.900 or higher of the season with a team-high 9.900. Copperwheat picked up a 9.800, while graduate student Kailey Gillings tied her career-high 9.825. Ewing also recorded a 9.825 and both Washington and Hutchison scored a 9.800. The team's 49.200 was the highest team score of the day for the Panthers, boosting their running score to 146.325 headed into beam.
BEAM
The final rotation was led by senior Kiley Robatin, with her team-high 9.725, followed by Copperwheat who earned a 9.675.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will find out if they qualified for regionals during the NCAA gymnastics selection show Tuesday, March 22. The NCAA Regional Championship will take place March 30-April 2.
