Pitt Falls in Home Opener

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball fell, 6-0, to Penn in its home opener at Vartabedian Field Wednesday night.
The game stayed scoreless through two innings, with the second inning ending in a 3-4-3-6-2-3-4 putout with a rundown between second and first.
Penn State (11-11) scored its first runs in the top of the third as back-to-back singles brought in one run each. The Nittany Lions scored one run in the top of the fourth to lead 3-0 and three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-0 advantage.
Junior Taegen Lewellen and senior Yvonne Whaley had the Panthers' two hits. Redshirt freshman Dani Drogemuller took the loss, allowing four earned runs and striking out seven in five innings pitched.
Pitt is back in action Friday, Mar. 18 as it takes on Notre Dame for the first of three games. Friday's game begins at 6 p.m. with live coverage on the ACCNX.
