NASHVILLE – Pitt baseball (4-3) split a doubleheader in the Music City College Classic Saturday at Dugan Field with a 16-0 victory (seven innings) over Lipscomb (3-2) and a 3-2 loss to Bradley (3-3). Logan Evans threw a three-hit shutout with just three hits and one walk allowed and six strikeouts.
GAME TWO
The Panthers took the lead in the game's first frame. Sky Duff and Jeffrey Wehler drew a one-out walk, and the bases became loaded with another walk with two outs by Kyle Hess. CJ Funk knocked in Duff and Wehler with a single through the right side.
Pitt turned the game into a blowout in the third inning with seven runs. Wehler walked again with one out, and Tatem Levins was hit by a pitch. Hess brought home Wehler with a single through the right side. After the bases were loaded on a walk by Funk, Bryce Hulett then singled through the right side for another run. Johnny Long doubled down the left field line to knock in both Hess and Funk. Following a pitching change, Brock Franks hit a three-run homer to right field, his first of the year.
The Panthers picked up right where they left off in the next inning. Wehler led off with a single to left center. Hess then hit a one-out two-run homer to right field.
Another two runs came in the sixth inning. With one out, Hess singled to right field and Funk walked. Hulett got another RBI-single to left center to bring in Hess, and Hulett came home safely on an RBI-groundout by Long.
With the 10-run rule, agreed upon all three teams before the weekend, ready to be invoked, Pitt added three more runs in the final inning. Wehler doubled down the left field line. After pinch-hitter Dom Popa walked with two outs, Funk cleared the bases with a triple to centerfield. Funk then scored on a single through the right side by pinch-hitter Jack Anderson.
GAME ONE
After recording one hit and one walk through the first five innings, the Braves broke through in the sixth inning. Starting the frame with a double and single, Bradley produced three runs with a squeeze bunt and two sac flies.
Pitt's ninth inning rally fell just short. Hess homered to right field with one out to cut the deficit to one run. Hulett then singled to centerfield to put the tying run on first base, but two-straight outs followed.
The Panthers got on the board in the first frame of the game. Duff led off with a single up the middle and went to second base on a sac bunt by Wehler. With two outs, Ron Washington, Jr. dropped a single into left center to knock in Duff.
Pitt closes out the nonconference tournament with a second matchup against Lipscomb Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
