NASHVILLE – Pitt baseball (5-3) defeated the host school Lipscomb (3-3) in the finale of the Music City College Classic Sunday at Dugan Field. Bryce Hulett's leadoff homer in the ninth inning secured the late inning comeback win for the Panthers.
Pitt had tied it up in the previous inning. Jeffrey Wehler led off the eighth with a walk, stole second base and advanced twice on wild pitches for the tying run.
Lipscomb took the lead with RBI-singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The Bisons had the game's first lead in their first trip to the plate, taking advantage of the bases being loaded with a wild pitch followed by an RBI-groundout.
The Panthers tied it up in the next inning. Kyle Hess led off with a single to centerfield, and Tatem Levins followed with a homer to right field, his second of the year.
Pitt took its first lead in the third inning when Brock Franks hit a leadoff homer to right center, his second-straight game with a home run.
The scoring for the Panthers continued in the following inning. Levins led off with a single to left field, and Jack Anderson drew a walk. After a sac bunt by Hulett advanced both of them, Levins was able to score after the Bisons' first baseman dropped the ball in a rundown induced by Anderson following a CJ Funk groundout.
Pitt returns to action next Friday at the All-American Classic in Fayetteville, N.C. against Army at 3 p.m. followed by matchups against Ohio State (Saturday at 1 p.m.) and Campbell (Sunday at 3 p.m.).
