COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The Pitt softball team swept the competition Friday in the first day of the Texas A&M Invitational, defeating Missouri State 4-1 in eight innings and Stephen F. Austin 6-4 in the night cap.
NEWS & NOTES
Game One vs. Missouri State
Drogemuller got off to a hot start in the circle, striking out two batters in the top of the first. Sophomore Cami Compson led off the top of the second with a hit by pitch and Lane moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez recorded the first hit and RBI of her career, singling to center and bringing in Compson, who made a nifty maneuver around the catcher to avoid the tag.
Through five innings, Drogemuller struck out seven and allowed two hits and one walk but got into a jam in the sixth as the first two Missouri State (1-5) batters got on via a single and walk. A groundout to second moved the runners to second and third and a single to short tied the game up at 1-1. She was able to limit the damage, striking out her eighth batter and forcing a groundout to end the frame.
The Panthers got into scoring position in the top of the seventh, as senior Katlyn Pavlick and classmate Yvonne Whaley had back-to-back singles with one out. A pop out and strikeout left the two runners on, and Pitt couldn't break the tie. Drogemuller retired the Bears on seven pitches in the bottom of the frame to force extras.
The game went into international tiebreak rules, putting a runner on second at the start of each innings. Compson was placed on second and went to third after a Sarah Seamans sac-bunt. The Panthers were able to find power behind Lane's bat with the wind blowing into home plate as she hit at two-run homer to left, making it a 3-1 game. Two batters later, Griggs mirrored Lane with a homer to left – the first of her career – and added an insurance run for Pitt.
Drogemuller went out for the eighth and forced two groundouts and struck out one to seal the deal for the Panthers.
Game Two vs. Stephen F. Austin
Stephen F. Austin (1-7) got on the board first with a solo home run to right by Shaylon Govan. The Ladyjacks added three runs as Govan homered a second time, this time a three-run homer to left center to make it a 4-0 game.
Pitt (4-3) cut the Stephen F. Austin lead in half in the top of the fourth as Ramirez hit a two-run home run to center, the first of her career. The Ladyjacks got runners to second and first with two outs, but graduate student pitcher Ally Muraskin forced a flyout to end the frame.
The Panthers bats found their rhythm in the top of the fifth, as freshman Haylie Brunson led the inning off with a double, her fourth of the season. Seamans doubled herself and brought in Brunson, while Lane sent a deep shot to right and the right fielder saw it go in and out of her glove, sending Seamans home and Lane to third. Ramirez continued to swing a hot bat, singling to right for her third RBI of the game and giving Pitt its first lead of the contest, 5-4. Senior Katlyn Pavlick added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to center and Pitt ended the inning with four runs on four hits.
Muraskin and Drogemuller kept the Ladyjacks at bay, combining for three shutout innings to close out the game and give the Panthers a 6-4 victory. The win was Muraskin's first of the season, while Drogemuller earned her first career save.
Senior Yvonne Whaley and Ramirez each finished with two hits for the game. The Panthers totaled eight hits as a team, four of which were for extra base hits.
