Pitt Splits Day Two of Texas A&M Invite

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – The Pitt softball team finished the Texas A&M Invitational winning three of four games as it fell 10-0 in five innings to Texas A&M and rebounding for a 3-2 victory over Kansas Saturday evening at Davis Diamond.

Game One vs. Texas A&M
Pitt put a runner in scoring position early as junior EC Taylor singled and found her way to third, but a strikeout ended the threat. Texas A&M's (10-0) offense came out strong, as two, two-RBI doubles and a two-RBI triple were recorded as it led 6-0 after the first inning.
The Aggies scored its seventh run with a solo home run to center in the top of the second and recorded three runs in the top of the third to make it 10-0. Pitt fell in five innings.
Game Two vs. Kansas
The Panthers and Kansas (6-3) were deadlocked at 0-0 through three innings, as Drogemuller tallied five K's and allowed two hits through three.
The Jayhawk offense got a runner on first with one out in the top of the fourth. Freshman Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez had a ball slip out of her glove on a pitch, but she gathered it with her barehand in midair and threw down the runner trying to steal second. Drogemuller recorded her sixth strikeout of the game in the at bat to end the inning.
Pitt broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth as junior EC Taylor got on with a one out single and stole second, her fourth of the season. Senior Yvonne Whaley bunted for a hit – her second bunt single of the game – and advanced Taylor to third. Whaley also stole second and the Panthers had runners on second and third. Freshman Haylie Brunson made hard contact to second base but couldn't advance the runners as the second out was recorded. Senior Sarah Seamans drew a walk and set up Compson with the bases loaded, who sent a hard line drive to right center for a bases clearing double and give Pitt a 3-0 lead.
Kansas made things interesting in the final inning as it got runners to second and first with one out and the bases loaded with two outs. Taylor caught a pop fly in right to end the game as the Panthers held on for the 3-2 victory.
Whaley finished the game 3-for-3 with a run and stolen base while Compson went 2-for-3. Drogemuller earned her second win of the Invitational in the circle.
Pitt next heads to Spartanburg, S.C., to partake in the Wings ETC Classic on the campus of USC Upstate. The Panthers will play five games in three days, beginning with Tennessee Tech Friday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m.
NEWS & NOTES
- Redshirt freshman Dani Drogemuller threw a complete game in the win over the Jayhawks, allowing six hits and two earned and striking out seven. She finished the Invitational with two wins and a save, 18 strikeouts and three earned runs in 18 innings pitched.
- Sophomore Cami Compson delivered the go-ahead hit in the fifth inning against Kansas, driving a 3-RBI double to right center to put Pitt up 3-0.
