PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Pitt baseball (2-1) swept a doubleheader 12-2 (seven innings) and 4-0 over Canisius (1-2) in the Snowbird Classic Saturday at Centennial Park. Logan Evans and Hayden Summers combined for a four-hit shutout in the second win.
GAME ONE RECAP
Pitt jumped all over Canisius from the get-go. After Sky Duff drew a walk in the Panthers' first at-bat, Jeffrey Wehler crushed a ball over the centerfield fence for his first homer as a Panther. Jack Anderson led off with his first homer as a Panther the next inning.
Kyle Hess doubled down the right field line in the third inning. After Anderson walked, Bryce Hulett doubled to right field to knock in Hess. Brock Franks drew a two-out walk, and Duff brought home Hulett and Anderson with a single up the middle. Back-to-back walks by Wehler and Tatem Levins resulted in another run. Ron Washington, Jr. hit a hard ground ball at the third baseman for an RBI-infield single, and Hess was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the sixth run of the frame.
In the fourth inning, the Panthers got their final three runs. Hulett led off with a walk. With two outs, Duff singled through the right side. Both came in on a double off the right field fence from Wehler, and he came home on a single to left field by Levins.
The Golden Griffins got their two runs in the sixth inning, and the game was ended in the middle of the seventh inning due to the tournament's 10-run mercy rule after seven innings.
GAME TWO RECAP
Pitt took its lead in the fifth inning. CJ Funk drew a leadoff walk, went to second base on a sac bunt by Franks and scored on a two-out single to right field by Duff. Hess then hit his first homer of the season to left center.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the eighth inning. With two outs, Washington, Jr. walked, stole second base and scored off a fielding error by the first baseman on a throw by the catcher off a wild pitch that Hulett swung out for a third strike.
Pitt and Canisius finish the four-game series Sunday at 12 p.m.
