
Pitt Drops Two in Final Day of Northern Lights Invitational

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Pitt softball team fell twice Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Northern Lights Invitational, falling to Iowa 9-4 and dropping a pitcher's duel contest to Penn State, 1-0.
NEWS & NOTES
-Freshman Haylie Brunson finished the day 3-for-6 with a double. She leaves Leesburg 8-for-17 with three doubles, three RBI, three runs and one stolen base.
-Graduate student Ally Muraskin shined in her first career Panther start, throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts.
Game One vs. Iowa
Iowa (3-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning with five hits, all of which were singles. Redshirt freshman Dani Drogemuller started the game in the circle and was charged with only one earned run as an error put Hawkeyes in scoring position early.
Pitt answered in the bottom of the frame as Brunson started the inning off with a single. Senior Sarah Seamans walked and junior Kayla Lane bunted for a single, loading the bases. Senior Katlyn Pavlick came on as a pinch hitter and delivered in the opportunity, sending a line drive to the centerfield wall for a three-RBI triple.
In the next at-bat, junior Bailey Drapola singled to left, bringing in Pavlick to tie the game at 4-4. In total between both teams, the second inning consisted of eight runs, nine hits and three left on base.
The Hawkeyes got one back in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly and scored one run each in the top of the fourth and fifth. Iowa added two more in the top of the seventh and the Panthers couldn't respond, falling 9-4.
It was the second game of the season the Panthers had two triples in the same game, bringing their total to four on the year. Drogemuller suffered the loss but was credited for only one earned run in 1.1 innings of work.
Game Two vs. Penn State
A pitcher's duel commenced as Muraskin pitched a solid performance in her first career start as a Panther. She finished the day throwing a complete game, giving up four hits, one earned, two walks and striking out seven.
Penn State (2-3) scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third off an RBI double from Cassie Lindmark. Pitt (2-3) threatened in the top of the fourth with runners on second and third and one out but couldn't bring them in as two strikeouts were recorded.
The Panthers had one last shot in the top of the seventh as Brunson started the inning off with a single to right. Seaman's moved pinch-runner Drapola over to second via sac-bunt, but the offense couldn't bring her in as a strikeout ended the game.
Brunson had two of the Panthers' three hits while redshirt freshman Jack Busch had the third.
Pitt returns to the diamond Friday, Feb. 18 for two games in the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas. First game is set for 10 a.m. versus Missouri State followed by Stephen F. Austin at 8 p.m.
