Panthers Primed for Tri-Meet in Chapel Hill

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team (2-1, 1-0 EAGL) will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a tri-meet against No. 25 North Carolina (4-4, 2-1 EAGL) and Towson (4-1, 1-1 EAGL) Friday at 7 p.m. ET at the Carmichael Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Panthers shattered the beam school record en route to a 195.575-192.925 win against Texas Woman's University Saturday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
 - The freshman duo of Hallie Copperwheat and Sidney Washington had standout performances – earning three individual titles on the night. Copperwheat recorded career-high scores on beam (9.875) and bars (9.850), while Washington concluded with a 39.250 – the highest all-around score so far this season for the Panthers.
 - Junior Lauren Beckwith and senior Katie Chamberlain had standout performances on the night. Chamberlain returned to the vault for the first time since February 28, 2021, scoring a 9.750. Beckwith contributed a season-high 9.800 on beam and an impressive 9.775 on floor.
 
- In last Saturday's dual meet at Texas Woman's University, Washington earned a 9.750 or higher on all four events, combining to take home the all-around title with a score of 39.250 – the highest for the Panthers this season. Her
 - The Ann Arbor, Mich. native earned a 9.850 on floor and a 9.800 or higher on beam for the second consecutive meet, contributing to the team's program-high beam score of 49.200. Washington earned a podium finish in every event against the Pioneers (AA – 1st, Bars – 2nd, Bars, Vault, Floor – T-2nd).
 - Washington's title marks the second conference award for the Panthers, joining freshman Hallie Copperwheat who earned the Co-Rookie of the Week title following the season opening tri-meet vs. LIU and Maryland.
 
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
- The No. 25 Tar Heels (4-4, 2-1 EAGL) posted their highest team score since March 2018 in their last meet against George Washington and No. 8 Missouri, 196.475. The team finished second overall, falling to Missouri.
 - Freshman Lali Dekanoidze was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week for the second time this season, after a career-high 39.450 in the all-around - the highest score in the EAGL so far.
 - Friday's meet will be the 48th meeting between UNC and Pitt. The Panthers are looking to secure their first win in program history at Carmichael Arena.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
- Despite posting their season-best overall score of 194.975, the Tigers (4-1, 1-1 EAGL) fell to No. 21 N.C. State in a dual meet last weekend. The Tigers have put up their highest point total in the month of January since rejoining the EAGL in 2013.
 - Last season, Towson reached the NCAA Regional Meet for the first time in two decades and finished 29th in the country. The Tigers returned five All-EAGL First Team selections and six All-EAGL Second Team selections. Towson was voted to finish second in the Preseason EAGL Coaches' Poll.
 - Friday will be the 50th meeting between the Tigers and Pitt. Towson currently holds a 17-9 lead over the Panthers when competing at a neutral site.

- Pitt will return home to host the University of Alaska, NC State, and West Virginia in a quad meet, Sunday Feb. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House.
