Florida State (36-9-1, 24-5-1 ACC) entered the game vying for the ACC regular season crown. The Seminoles jumped to a quick 1-0 lead after a solo shot from Sydney Sherrill in the second at-bat of the game. Florida State scored two runs in the top of the third and one run in the top of the fourth to lead 4-0.
Sophomore Kayla Lane gave Pitt its first hit of the game with a solo home run to left field, cutting into the Seminole lead 4-1. The homer was her sixth of the season. After a Compson double down the right field line, graduate student Walker Barbee hit a two-run homer to left field, putting Pitt within one run.
Senior LoLo Sanchez extended the fourth inning after reaching third base on a Florida State error, and sophomore Bailey Drapola brought her in with a game-tying single down the right field line.
Florida State scored a run in the top of the sixth, but starting redshirt senior pitcher Brittany Knight limited the damage to one run with two strikeouts. She later tallied another strikeout in the top of the seventh – her seventh of the evening – and Pitt trailed 5-4 heading into the final inning.
Senior Brie Horrell came on to pinch hit for the Panthers and led off the inning with a walk. Junior Hannah Bach pinch ran for her and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from senior Chandler Walter. After Lane popped up to first, Compson hit a towering two-run homer to center to give Pitt a 6-5 walk-off upset victory.
Knight earned her sixth win of the season inside the circle, throwing a complete game with five runs (three earned), five hits and seven strikeouts. Barbee finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk.
Pitt is back in action tomorrow for two games with the Seminoles starting at 1 p.m. Prior to game one, the Panthers will honor Team Impact sister Rylee DiTullio. After game two, the team will honor the seven seniors and the class of 2021.
