No. 16 Pitt Drops Backyard Brawl Road Matchup 8-2

PITTSBURGH – No. 16 Pitt (20-12) fell 8-2 to West Virginia (16-21) Wednesday night at Monogalia County Ballpark. The Panthers and Mountaineers split the 2021 Backyard Brawl Series, as Pitt won 5-1 in Pittsburgh April 6.
WVU scored in its first trip to the plate with a two-out RBI-triple and got another run in the next inning with an RBI-groundout.
The Mountaineers doubled their lead in the fourth inning. With the bases load and two outs, they got an one-run infield single followed by an RBI-walk.
The Panthers got on the board in the sixth inning. Nico Popa led off with a single to the shortstop and scored on a two-out double down the right field line by David Yanni.
WVU pushed the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning.
Pitt got its second run in the eighth inning. Ron Washington, Jr. singled to right field with one out, went to third base on a two-out single by Yanni and raced home on a wild pitch.
Pitt resumes ACC play at home with Boston College beginning Friday at 6 p.m.

- Chris Gomez threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
