No. 16 Pitt Drops Home Series-Opener 3-2 to NC State

PITTSBURGH – No. 16 Pitt (22-14, 16-12) dropped the series-opener 3-2 to NC State (24-14, 15-13) Friday at Charles L. Cost Field.
The Wolfpack scored first with a two-out RBI-single to left field in the second inning.
The Panthers responded in the next frame. Ron Washington, Jr. led off with a homer to left field, his sixth of the year. With two outs, Brock Franks doubled down the left field line. Ramon Padilla then singled down the right field line to knock in Franks.
NC State tied it up with a one-out RBI-double to left field in the fifth inning and took the lead for good in the seventh inning when the leadoff hitter tripled down the right field line and raced home safely on a wild pitch.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m. The game serves as senior day for Pitt, as 10 Panthers will be honored before the game.

- Mitch Myers started and went six innings with two runs, eight hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
- Chase Smith threw a scoreless inning of relief with no hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
- Corey Sawyer also had a scoreless relief appearance, registering four outs with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.
- Yanni also moved into a tie for fourth-place in career doubles (47) with Brad Rhea (1999-02) and career RBIs (143) with Joe Leonard (2008-10) and 10th-place for career runs (141) with Jim Negrych (2004-06).
- Sky Duff was the only Panther with multiple hits, going 2-4.
- David Yanni and Washington, Jr. also reached base twice with each having an extra-base hit and walk.
- Yanni moved ahead of Jim Negrych (2004-06) for the third-most doubles (49) in program history.
