Trailing 10-5 in the seventh inning, Pitt started its second comeback attempt. Nico Popa led off with a single to first base, and Kyle Hess homered to right field, his fourth of the season. Ron Washington, Jr. singled to second base, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, went to third base on Bryce Hulett's single to left field and scored on an RBI-groundout by Brock Franks.
The Panthers had the tying run on second base in the final inning. David Yanni singled to right field with one out and got to second base on a wild pitch. Franks knocked him in with a two-out double to right field. A groundout in the next at-bat ended the game.
The teams combined for nine runs in the first inning. North Carolina took the lead on the first pitch of the game, a solo homer to left center. The Tar heels would get four more runs on a pair of two-RBI hits, a one-out double and two-out homer.
In the Panthers' first trip to the plate, Sky Duff led off with a single through the left side, and Popa drew a walk. Duff advanced on a wild pitch and raced home on a sac fly to left field by Hess. Washington, Jr. dropped a single along the right field line. With two outs, Hulett cleared the bases with a three-run homer that just snuck over the wall and inside the left field foul pole, his third home run of the season.
Pitt tied it up in the fifth inning. Duff doubled to right center with one out. The bases became loaded on after Popa reached base on an error and Hess was hit by a pitch. Washington, Jr. brought Duff home with a sac fly to right field.
North Carolina took back the lead the next inning on a sac fly of its own, and added to its lead with back-to-back solo homers to begin the seventh inning.
Pitt goes on the road for the first time in over a month with No. 2 Louisville starting Friday at 3 p.m. with an ACC Network broadcast.
