No. 14 Pitt Drops Series Opener 5-1 to No. 22 Virginia Tech

PITTSBURGH – No. 14 Pitt baseball (12-6, 8-5) dropped its ACC home-opener 5-2 to No. 22 Virginia Tech (11-8, 7-6) Friday evening at Charles L. Cost Field.
The Hokies got on the board in the third inning on a two-run double and led the rest of the way.
The Panthers had cut their deficit in half with their only run in the next inning. The bases were loaded with one out following walks by Samuel Frontino and Bryce Hulett and a hit by pitch by David Yanni. Riley Wash knocked in Yanni with a single up the middle, but the Panthers couldn't get any more runners home with two-straight strikeouts.
Virginia Tech added to its lead with a solo homer in the seventh inning and RBI-double and sac fly in the eighth inning.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m.

- Mitch Myers started on the mound and went six innings with two runs, six hits and four walks allowed with six strikeouts.
- David Ferguson threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with two walks and two strikeouts, and Dominic Verrastro threw one pitch to produce the last Hokies' out.
- Pitt stranded 10 runners.
- The only Pitt batter with more than one hit, Nico Popa had half of the Panthers' hits going 3-5.
- Hulett drew two walks.
