PITTSBURGH – No. 14 Pitt baseball (12-7, 8-6) fell 8-4 to No. 22 Virginia Tech (12-8, 8-6) Saturday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field.

Trailing 8-1 in the last inning, the Panthers got the tying run on deck but fell short. Nico Popa and Kyle Hess opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and Ron Washington, Jr. homered to left center, his second of the season. David Yanni singled to right field and then went to third base on a double to right center by Samuel Frontino. The Panthers then struck out in their next three at-bats.

Tied 1-1, the Hokies pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning on a pair of RBI-singles and a sac fly. Virginia Tech added another run in the eighth inning on another one-run single and two more in the ninth.

Pitt's first run came in the fourth inning. With one out, Hess singled to right field, advanced to third base on a single to left field by Washington, Jr. and scored on a sac fly to right field by Yanni.

The series finale is an ACC Network broadcast Sunday at 1 p.m.

NOTES

Matt Gilbertson started on the mound and went seven innings with four runs, six hits and one walk allowed with three strikeouts.
Dominic Verrastro threw an inning of scoreless relief with a strikeout.
Hess and Washington, Jr. both went 2-4.
Frontino was the only other Panther to get on base twice with a hit and walk.
