Eight Run Seventh Inning Fuels Pitt to Comeback Victory over Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. – Down 8-1 heading into the top of the seventh, the University of Pittsburgh softball team scored eight runs to take a 9-8 lead and sealed the deal in the bottom of the frame to win its second of two games over Georgia Tech Saturday evening. Pitt also defeated the Yellow Jackets, 6-1, in game one of its doubleheader earlier in the day.
NEWS & NOTES
After a scoreless first inning, Pitt (8-10, 3-5 ACC) got on the board first in the top of the second. Junior Katlyn Pavlick singled to left and sophomore Sarah Seamans singled to center, setting up freshman Cami Compson. Compson hit a three-run homerun, her third of the season and put the Panthers up 3-0 early.
Pitt added another run (4-0) in the top of the fourth, as senior Morgan Batesole hit a solo shot over the Georgia Tech scoreboard for her third homer of the year. The Panthers led, 5-0, after Compson again hit a homerun to left, this time a solo shot for her fourth RBI of the game. The multi-homer game is the first of the season for Pitt.
Georgia Tech (7-15, 2-11 ACC) responded with a run of its own in the fourth, as Emma Kauf hit a solo homerun to left center. Pitt led 5-1 after four innings. Senior Hunter Levesque got that run back (6-1) for the Panthers in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to center, scoring sophomore EC Taylor. The sixth and seventh innings were scoreless, and the Panthers held on for a 6-1 victory.
Compson went a perfect 3-for-3 with two homeruns and four RBI. Batesole went 1-for-3 with a homerun, RBI and a run scored. Junior Abby Edwards continued her stretch of impressive starts in the circle, going the distance with two strikeouts, allowing only three hits and one earned run.
Game Two
Pavlick quickly made it a 1-0 game with a RBI single to left, scoring Taylor and picking up right where the Panthers left off in game one. However, the Yellow Jackets answered with a three run homerun to left and took a 3-1 lead after the first inning.
In the ensuing four innings, Georgia Tech hit three homeruns and took a seven run, 8-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth. The Yellow Jackets led by the same score going into the last inning.
Taylor walked and Batesole got on via hit by pitch, and the Panthers started with runners on second and first, no outs. Levesque knocked a double down the left field, bringing in Taylor and making it an 8-2 game.
After a Pavlick hit by pitch, Seamans walked and brought in Batesole in the process (8-3) to load the bases for Compson. Compson struck out, and sophomore Kayla Lane stepped in. During Lane's at bat, Pavlick scored via wild pitch and all runners advanced one base as the score went to 8-4. Lane struck out, putting freshman Jack Busch at the plate with runners on second and third, two outs.
Busch drew a walk and senior LoLo Sanchez stepped in with the bases loaded. Sanchez singled and advanced to second on the throw as Levesque and Seamans scored, cutting the Georgia Tech lead to just three runs, 8-6.
Taylor drew a walk, the Panthers' fourth of the inning, and Batesole approached the plate with two outs the bases loaded. Batesole hit a bloop single to left field, scoring Taylor and Sanchez. During the throw home, Batesole attempted to go to second, only to be caught in a rundown. Busch, who advanced to third from the throw home, sprinted home and Batesole lasted long enough in the pickle to see Busch score before being tagged out. Batesole's three RBI gave Pitt a 9-8 lead.
Edwards, the winner of game one, came on to close for the Panthers and found herself with the bases loaded and two outs. The Panther defense prevailed, as Edwards forced a pop up to Batesole at shortstop and Pitt won, 9-8.
Batesole finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Taylor went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two walks and a stolen base, while Levesque went 1-for-3 with a double, one RBI, one walk and a run.
Pitt concludes its ACC series with Georgia Tech tomorrow at 12 p.m. Coverage will be held on the ACCNX.

- Freshman Cami Compson went 4-for-6 at the plate today, hitting two homeruns and recording four RBI and a 1.667 slugging percentage. Compson leads the team in batting average (.357) and is tied for second with 12 RBI.
- Senior Morgan Batesole finished 3-for-8 with a homerun, four RBI and two runs scored. Her three RBI single to left center gave Pitt the 9-8 advantage in game two.
- Junior Abby Edwards threw a complete-game in game one, striking out two and allowing only three hits and one earned for her third victory of the season. In her last three starts in the circle, Edwards is 3-0 with three complete games, one shutout and has tallied 11 strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs in that span.
