DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped two games Saturday afternoon as it fell to Virginia and No. 18/19 Duke in day three of ACC Pod Play.
GAME ONE
Scoreless through the first two innings, Virginia (2-3, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Cavaliers scored two runs on two walks and one run from a hit by pitch. The Hoos scored the fourth via sac fly from Savana Avilla.
Pitt recorded its first hit of the ballgame in the top of the fifth as senior Morgan Batesole singled to left. Senior Chandler Walter singled up the middle to put runners on second and first with one out, however a runner's interference and a line out ended the inning.
Sophomore Becca Miller kept the Cavaliers scoreless in the fifth and sixth as the Panthers entered the top of seventh down four. Senior Walker Barbee opened the inning with a single to left, followed by Batesole who also singled to left and put the Panthers in scoring position with no outs. Walter earned first via hit by pitch and the bases were loaded for freshman Cami Compson. Compson struck out swinging, putting sophomore Sarah Seamans to the plate with one out.
Seamans drew a bases loaded walk, scoring one and cutting the lead to 4-1. Sophomore Bailey Drapola followed Seamans with a foul ball down the right field line but deep enough to bring in Batesole from third and make it a 4-2 game. Sophomore EC Taylor had runners on second and third, two outs, but could not connect as she struck out swinging to end the game.
Miller pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing five hits and striking out two. Redshirt senior Brittany Knight pitched 2.1 innings and took the loss. Batesole went 2-for-3 with a run, while Seamans went 1-for-2 with a walk and a RBI.
GAME TWO
Duke (6-0, 2-0 ACC) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first by fielding error, as the Panthers had three errors in the first that cost them one run.
Pitt answered in the top of the second, as junior Katlyn Pavlick hit a three-run homerun to left field for her first of the season, giving the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
After a scoreless bottom of the second, the Blue Devils took a one run, 4-3 lead as Raine Wilson reached on a fielding error by Pitt to score two and Sydney Bolan singled to right field, scoring one. Duke added seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-3 lead and kept the lead through the fifth inning.
