Panthers Face Duke, Virginia in ACC Pod Play

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team travels to the Raleigh/Durham area to take on Duke and Virginia in ACC Pod Play this weekend.

- Pitt will face Duke once Thursday at 4 p.m. The two teams were originally scheduled for a double-header Thursday, however rain in the forecast has caused the first game to be moved to Saturday.
- The Panthers play Duke at 4 p.m. and Virginia at 6 p.m. Friday evening in Durham, followed by Virginia (11 a.m.) and Duke (4 p.m.) at Duke Saturday.
- Pitt concludes ACC Pod Play Sunday afternoon against Virginia at 1:30 p.m.
- Games Thursday through Saturday are scheduled to be played at Duke, while Sunday's game against Virginia will be at NC State in Raleigh.
- Rain is forecasted all day Thursday in the Durham area. Schedule may change due to conflicting weather.
- The University of Pittsburgh softball team begins ACC play Thursday, Feb. 18 in ACC Pod Play action on the campuses of Duke and NC State.
- The Panthers face No. 18/19 Duke three times (twice Thursday, once Friday) and Virginia three times (once Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
- In six ACC games played last season, Pitt finished 2-4 with wins against North Carolina and Clemson.
- Pitt went 0-2 in the first weekend of softball since March 2020, falling to Liberty and New Mexico State in The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla.
- The Panthers were scheduled to play Middle Tennessee and Liberty Saturday, Feb. 13., however rain canceled Pitt's last two contests.
- Senior Hunter Levesque ended the 2020 campaign on an 11-game hitting streak, finishing the season with a .321 batting average, 18 hits, four doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and a team-best .433 on-base percentage.
- During her 11-game hitting streak that rolls into this season, Levesque batted. .355 with 11 hits, three doubles, 19 total bases and 10 runs. Her slugging percentage (.613) and on-base percentage (.444) were the best on the team during that stretch.
- Levesque earned Second Team All-NFCA Region and Second Team All-ACC honors sophomore year. Last year, no accolades were given due to the shortened season.
- The Panthers meet the Blue Devils for the seventh, eighth and ninth time this weekend at ACC Pod Play in Durham, N.C.
- The series is tied, 3-3, with Pitt winning the last meeting 5-3 March 17, 2019.
- Duke went a perfect 4-0 in Baton Rouge, La., this past weekend with wins over No. 5 LSU, McNeese and Central Arkansas twice.
- Senior Peyton St. George turned in an impressive performance in the circle, throwing a complete game victory with three hits, four runs (four earned) and eight strikeouts against No. 5 LSU in Baton Rouge. Her outing earned her ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week.
- Senior Jameson Kavel went 7-for-14 this past weekend, scoring five runs and recording a double, four RBI and drew two walks.
- Senior Rachel Crabtree hit three doubles, a number good for second in the ACC and fifth nationally. She also had four RBI and three runs to her credit.
- The Blue Devils lead the conference and are 14th nationally in doubles per game (2.00), while their scoring mark of 7.50 runs per game ranks second in the league and 24th in the country.
- Duke began the season No. 25 in the USA Today/NFCA and receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Softball and have since climbed to No. 18 and 19, respectively, in each poll.
- Pitt's meeting with the Cavaliers Friday will be the 20th in school history.
- Virginia narrowly leads the all-time series, 10-9. The Hoos have won three straight against the Panthers, most recently March 11, 2019 by a 5-4 decision.
- Virginia went 1-1 this past weekend, falling to Georgia 1-1 and defeating South Alabama 9-4. The last two games scheduled for the Hoos were canceled due to weather in Athens, Ga.
- Senior Kate Covington is off to a powerful start offensively, going 2-for-4 with a homerun, double and four RBI. Her 1.500 slugging percentage ranks second in the conference and 14th nationally.
- Sophomore Katie Goldberg hit .500 in Athens, going 3-for-6 with a homer, two runs, two RBI and six total bases. Her .500 batting average is tied for sixth (with teammate Covington) in the conference.
- The Panthers continue on the road, with their next stopping in Macon, Ga., in the Black and Orange Challenge hosted by Mercer.
- Pitt takes on Mercer and Toledo twice starting Friday, Feb. 26 and concluding Saturday, Feb. 27.
