
Pitt Heads To Virginia Tech For Final Tune-Up Before ACC ITF Championships

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt track and field team returns to action this weekend at the Virginia Tech Challenge in what will be their final tune-up for the 2021 ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships. The VT Challenge is a two-day meet that will take place on Feb. 19-20 at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg.

SCOUTING THE FIELD
- 15 teams will be competing in the Virginia Tech Challenge this weekend. The teams participating are Virginia Tech, Virginia, Duke, UNC, NC State, High Point, St. John's, Towson State, UCONN, VCU, West Virginia, ECU, Campbell, Liberty, and William & Mary.
- The ranked teams participating this weekend will be NC State (Women – 23rd) and the hosts Virginia Tech (Women – 15th, Men – 25th).
- The Panthers had another strong showing last weekend at the Tiger Paw Invite in Clemson as they posted six top-10 all-time marks, two event winners and multiple personal bests throughout the weekend.
- Senior Ally Brunton had a strong weekend at Clemson as she was able to post two top-10 times in the two events she ran. She opened up her weekend with a fifth place finish in the mile run as she crossed the finish line in 4:51.54, the eighth best mile time in program history. She then posted the 10th fastest 800m time in program history, finishing in 2:12.14.
- In the men's mile, Evan Addison was able to collect his first victory of the season in 4:04.08 while Josh Higgins came in third place in 4:06.44, the 10th fastest mile time in school history.
- Senior high jumper Greg Lauray notched his second win in as many weeks as he cleared a season-best height of 7'1.00" (2.16m). The height is tied for the best in the ACC this season and 10th best in the NCAA.
- Senior Zach Lefever had a strong weekend as he finished in fourth place in the 3000m run with a new personal record time of 8:17.42. His time marked the ninth best in program history in the event.
- In the men's 60m hurdles, Pitt had a pair of runners qualify for the finals. Kollin Smith posted a new personal best time of 8.07 seconds in the finals to take home sixth place while Daveon Finley had a season-best time of 8.30 seconds in the prelims. Smith's time was good for 10th fastest in program history in the event.
- The Panthers had two long jumper's post top-10 marks on Friday as Felix Wolter had a leap of 22'10.75" (6.98m), the 10th best leap in program history. On the women's side, Ilse Steigenga had a leap that covered 19'1.25" (5.82m), the 10th best in program history.
- The Panthers will head back to Clemson next week for the 2021 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet will run from Feb. 25-27 at the Clemson Indoor Track.
- The Panthers will be looking to improve their finishes at the Conference Championship meet from last season when the men took home 11th place with 22 points and the women finished in 13th place with 19 points.
