Pitt Opens Indoor Season By Setting Multiple Meet Records At YSU Icebreaker

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The University of Pittsburgh track and field team opened their indoor campaign Friday afternoon with some impressive performances. In all, Pitt collected 10 victories while setting six meet records and one facility record.
Felix Wolter had the biggest performance of the day for the Panthers as he was able to post the second best long jump in program history. Wolter earned the win in the event as he posted a jump of 25'4.75" (7.74m) which set a new meet and facility record and is the best leap of the season in the NCAA. Fellow Panther Kollin Smith also had a huge leap as he took home second place with a jump that cleared 24'7.00" (7.49m). His mark is currently the third best in the NCAA this season and third best in program history in the event.
The Pitt women also had a strong showing in the jumping events as Lydia Bottelier opened up her season with a victory in the high jump as she cleared a new personal record height. Bottelier set a meet record and posted the third best leap in program history as she cleared a height of 5'8.50" (1.74m). Sophomore Ilse Steigenga took home the win in the long jump as she set a meet record and personal best as she posted a distance of 19'6.75" (5.96m). The distance is the sixth best in program history and currently ranks fifth best in the NCAA this season.
Noah Walker picked up where he left off last season in the weight throw as he collected the victory with a heave that traveled 69'9.5" (21.27m). The throw was the best of his indoor career and marks the second best in program history in the event. Foluke Olujide-Ajibade also set a meet record in the weight throw as she posted a third place finish with a toss that traveled 58'10.25" (17.94m), the fifth best throw in the event in program history. In the shot put, Abena Atuobi took home second place with a throw of 48'0.00" (14.63m), which marks the seventh best throw in the event in the NCAA this season.
The Panthers had some dominant performances in the 400m dash as on the women's side Pitt took the top four spots. Breanna Phillips led the way with the victory in the event as she posted a time of 55.33 seconds while Flora Ahiarakwe finished right behind in second with a time of 56.60 seconds. Transfer Kamryn McIntosh took home third in 56.93 seconds while freshman Caleia Johnson posted the fourth place finish in 56.95 seconds. On the men's side, Ade Jones-Roundtree took home second place in 47.90 seconds followed by Lonzell Feagin in third with a time of 48.34 seconds.
The distance squad had a strong season-opener as Jack Balick and Caroline Bolen each notched victories in the 800m run. Balick posted a time of 1:55.85 while Bolen crossed the line in 2:19.41 to earn their first wins of the season. Finn Walsh opened his indoor career with a second place showing in the 800m run with a time of 1:55.86 and backed that up with a second place finish in the mile with a meet record time of 4:10.54. Bolen also earned a second place finish in the mile run with a time of 5:16.10.
Ahiarakwe opened up her season with a good showing in the 60m dash as she collected the victory in the finals, crossing the finish line in 7.82 seconds. On the men's side, Jones-Roundtree notched a third place finish in the 60m dash as he posted a time of 7.06 seconds. Freshman Elke van der Westhuizen opened up her collegiate career with a fourth place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 25.36 seconds while Kaneisha Raymond placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.98 seconds.
The Panthers had a pair of 4x400m relay squads go 1-2 in the event on Friday on both the men's and women's side. The quartet of Lonzell Feagin, Ade Jones-Roundtree, Matt Thompson and Nigel Hussey posted the win with a new meet record time of 3:13.10. Wolter, Greg Lauray, Smith and Cobe Wiggins took home second place in the event with a time of 3:20.23. On the women's side, the team of Ahiarakwe, McIntosh, Phillips and Johnson notched the win in 3:52.76 while the quartet of Eddita Pessima, van der Westhuizen, Raymond and Bottelier came in second in 3:59.79.
