
Pitt Falls in Backyard Brawl at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Pitt men's basketball team fell to West Virginia, 74-59, at WVU Coliseum Friday evening.
Sophomore John Hugley led the Panthers with 17 points while grabbing six rebounds. Graduate student Mouhamadou Gueye added 10 points with a game-high three blocks, while sophomore William Jeffress recorded eight points and seven rebounds.
Pitt (0-2) opened up the first four minutes of play with a 6-4 lead and led by the same into the first media timeout. After West Virginia (2-0) took a 12-8 advantage at the 13:53 mark, the Panthers went on a 5-0 run to lead 13-12 with 11:15 in the first. The Mountaineers went on a run of their own, outscoring Pitt 11-2 in the following two and a half minutes to take a 23-15 advantage.
Pitt trailed by as many as 15 points twice in the first half and went into halftime down 12, 36-24. The Panthers shot 50% from the field on 10-of-20 shooting after 20 minutes.
After West Virginia led by as much as 17 points (43-26) at the 16:42 mark, Pitt got it within 10 two minutes later. Three three-pointers in a 1:30 span gave the Mountaineers a 21 point lead and led by double-digits the rest of the way.
The Panthers shot 57% from the floor (23-of-40) and made three of its six three pointers of the game. Pitt also outrebounded the Mountaineers, 36-20, but recorded 32 turnovers.
Pitt is back in action Tuesday, Nov. 16 at home vs. UNC Wilmington. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
