BETHLEHEM, PA – The University of Pittsburgh cross country teams closed out their season on Friday afternoon at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, hosted by Lehigh at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.
The Pitt men were able to make history in the 10K race as they posted a fifth place team finish with a team score of 159. It marked the highest finish and lowest point total (159) in program history at the regional meet for the Panthers as they improved on their 2019 finish by two spots. The Pitt women finished in 16th place overall in the field of 27 talented squads as they posted a team score of 404 in the 6K race.
"On the men's side, the entire top seven ran a complete race today," said cross country coach Brad Herbster. "Jack was just off a NCAA individual qualifying spot but earned his first All-Region honor. Higgins really showed up today and put himself in the race competing the entire way. Evan and Luke battled and after the 6K mark they really relaxed and worked well together. Maher, Otis and Rollins all packed it up to contribute to the most successful NCAA Regional meet in program history. I am really proud of the effort and race the men had today."
Redshirt sophomore Jack Miller had the best race of his young career for Pitt as he crossed the finish line in 21st place, breaking his old personal record 10K time by nearly a minute as he finished in 31:06.2. The top-25 finish for Miller secured All-Region honors for the first time in his collegiate career.
Josh Higgins ran a strong race for the Panthers as he was able to post his best regionals finish of his career, crossing the finish line in 29th place overall. His time of 31:23.0 was a new personal record time breaking his last fastest 10K mark by nearly 50 seconds. Evan Addison was right behind Higgins in 34th place as he finished in 31:41.7 while Luke Henseler, Ethan Maher, Sam Otis and Tyler Rollins took home 37th, 38th, 39th and 43rd places, respectively. All three notched personal record 10K times to help Pitt post their best finish at regionals in program history.
The freshman duo of Emily Jobes and Caroline Rusinski closed out their strong first collegiate seasons with the top two spots on the team on Friday. Jobes crossed the finish line in 64th place with a new personal record 6K time of 22:09.3 while Rusinski crossed right behind her in 65th place in 22:10.7.
"The women were able to pack it up but too late into the race," said Herbster. "Emily Jobes really stepped up for us even though she wasn't feeling great as she was a highlight for us. The women are good and young, however we only had one race this season (ACC's) where we battled the entire way. But I am excited for this group and know big things will happen for this good young core."
Emily Brown finished third on the Panthers in 75th place as she posted a time of 22:24.1 while Sadie Carey-Tharp took home 80th place in 22:30.2. Mary Borkoski finished off her afternoon in 120th place as she crossed the finish line in 23:13.8 while Winnie Incorvaia took 124th place with a new personal record time of 23:13.8. Sophomore Olivia Zambrio posted her best finish at the regional meet as she notched the 135th place finish in 23:25.6.
