MIAMI, Fla. – Pitt baseball (10-3, 0-1 ACC) dropped its ACC-opener 5-4 to No. 6 Miami (8-5, 1-0) in 11 innings Friday afternoon at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes won on a walk-off homer that just got over the right field wall.
The Panthers had rallied back from a four-run deficit to force extra innings. Pitt cut it in half in the seventh inning. Kyle Hess led off with a single to right field, and Samuel Frontino drew a walk. After both advanced on a fly out to centerfield by Bryce Hulett, they scored on a ground-rule double in right field by Riley Wash.
Pitt tied it up in the following inning. With one out, Hess singled to right field and scored on a double down the left field line by Frontino. Frontino then came in on an RBI-single to left field by Hulett.
The Hurricanes took their first lead in the fourth inning on a pair of solo home runs to right field.
In the sixth inning, Miami added another two runs from an RBI-single up the middle.
NEWS AND NOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE BELL'S TAKE
"A great, hard fought Friday afternoon in the ACC," said Pitt head coach Mike Bell. "You had two good starts by both starting pitchers, and we didn't blink when they took the lead in the middle of the game. We scratched back with a lot of grit and team baseball, offensively and defensively. We came up one play short, but I couldn't be more proud of the fight and hard-nosed baseball we showed today."

The second game of the series is at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
