TAMPA, Fla. – Pitt baseball (10-6) ended a four-game road trip with a 12-8 loss to USF (6-10) Tuesday night at USF Baseball Stadium.
The Panthers got on the board in their first trip to the plate. Samuel Frontino hit a one-out solo homer to right field, his second of the season.
The Bulls quickly grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Tying with a RBI-ground out, a two-run single followed afterwards.
USF added to its lead in the third inning with a two-out, two-run single up the middle.
The Panthers cut their deficit to two runs in the fifth inning. David Yanni led off with a double to left field, and Riley Wash followed with a single to right field. Yanni scored on a sac fly to centerfield by Jordan Anderson, and Frontino knocked in Wash from second base on a two-out single to left center.
The Bulls got their biggest lead in the bottom of the inning. After a bases-loaded walk, a grand slam followed in the next at-bat.
The Panthers put up four runs in the seventh inning. Sky Duff drew a leadoff walk, went to third base after a throwing error on Frontino's infield single and scored on a one-out double to left field by Nico Popa. With two outs, Ron Washington Jr. hit his team-leading fourth homer of the year to left field.
USF responded by adding two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning on one-run single and double.
The Panthers made one-last rally in the ninth inning, but could plate just one run. Kyle Hess and Popa both singled to start, and Washington Jr. brought home Hess on a ground out to the second baseman.
NEWS AND NOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE BELL'S TAKE
"Once again I thought we put together some quality at-bats offensively," said Pitt head coach Mike Bell. "It was nice to see Washington and Frontino with big homers and others grinding out at-bats. The defense was strong, but we just have to understand about pitching with a lead and keeping the momentum on our side after a big inning. Finding the right combinations in the mid-week and settling on some roles in the bullpen is something we will continue to search for as we grow together as a team."
