Pitt Stumbles In Second Half; Falls To Georgia Tech At Home

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team dropped their second straight game on Thursday night as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets handed the Panthers a 77-48 defeat. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 15-8 overall and 6-6 in ACC play.
The major difference in the game came on the glass as the Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Panthers 43-26 and snagged a game-high 20 offensive rebounds. Georgia Tech turned the 20 offensive boards into 12 second chance points while Pitt was only able to post two second chance points in the loss.
The Panthers got out to a strong start on Thursday as Emy Hayford opened up the scoring with a drive and layup before Dayshanette Harris connected on a deep triple to give Pitt the early 5-2 lead. Marcella Lamark gave the Panthers the 9-5 lead at the first media timeout after a great post move and turnaround jumper. Out of the timeout, the Yellow Jackets scored five straight before Gabbie Green and Hayford each connected on a triple to send Pitt to the second quarter with the 17-14 lead.
Pitt struggled offensively in the second quarter as the Yellow Jackets outscored the Panthers 17-6 over the second 10 minutes of work. Green ended the scoring in the quarter as she nailed her second triple of the game to send the teams to the locker room with Georgia Tech leading 31-23.
Things started to take a turn for the worse for the Panthers in the third quarter as they weren't able to string together stops, allowing the Yellow Jackets to outscore the Panthers 27-18 in the quarter and take the 58-41 lead into the final frame. Pitt finished the third quarter shooting 75% from the floor, 6-for-8, but turned the ball over six times in the quarter to allow the visitors to push their lead out to 17.
The Yellow Jackets continued to add to their lead in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Panthers 19-7 over the final 10 minutes to secure the road victory.
Green finished off her night with 10 points on 3-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-3 from behind the arc while Igbokwe posted her second double figure scoring game of the season with 10 points, three rebounds and three steals. Jahsyni Knight had a great game off the Pitt bench as she netted four points, a career-high seven assists and five rebounds across 28 minutes of work while Hayford netted eight points, four rebounds and a career-best four assists in her second career start.
As a team, the Panthers shot 38.3% from the floor while Georgia Tech shot 43.5%. Pitt turned the ball over 23 times and the Yellow Jackets converted those chances into 24 points while Pitt held the 18-11 edge in fast break scoring in the loss.
