SOUTH BEND, IN – Despite a career-high 17 points from freshman Amber Brown, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team dropped a road game to Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon, 74-52. Pitt led by as many as five in the first half but were outscored 36-21 in the second half.
Brown led the way for the Panthers with a career game as she netted a career-high 17 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five assists while going 7-for-8 from the floor in the loss. Brown scored 15 of her career-best 17 in the second half while also connecting on all seven of her field goals across the final 20 minutes of work.
Pitt got off to a strong start on Sunday as Cara Judkins opened the scoring with a jumper before Gabbie Green nailed a triple and Dayshanette Harris knocked down a pull up jumper to give the Panthers the 8-5 lead at the first media timeout. The Irish came out of the media timeout and raced out to the 14-10 lead but the Panthers were able to end the quarter on a 7-0 run behind a Harris triple, Jahsyni Knight layup and a pair of Green freebies to take the 17-14 lead into the second.
The second quarter opened with both sides trading three-pointers before the Irish gained the 27-22 lead just over two minutes into action. After a pair of Harris free throws cut the Pitt deficit to three, the Irish were able to go on a 9-2 run to take their biggest lead of the half, 36-26. Pitt battled back over the final three minutes of the half as Judkins and Green netted buckets to send the teams to the locker room with Pitt trailing 38-31.
Pitt struggled to open the third quarter on Sunday as the Irish raced out to a 15-point lead, 50-35, as they opened the second half on a 12-4 run. Rita Igbokwe was able to get on the board with back-to-back layups in the quarter before Brown took over the offensive load for Pitt, scoring seven straight to close the quarter and bring the Panthers within 10, 58-48, through 30 minutes.
Notre Dame turned up the pressure to open the fourth quarter as they scored the first 14 points of the final quarter to take control of the game. The Irish never looked back after the strong start to the final quarter as they outscored Pitt 16-4 over the final 10 minutes.
Harris had a strong start to the game for the Panthers as she netted 14 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists across just 19 minutes of work before sitting out most of the second half after getting hit with an elbow. Igbokwe finished off her night with four points, a team-high 11 rebounds and a block in the loss while Green chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and an assist.
As a team, the Panthers shot just 25.7% from the floor while the Irish were able to shoot 41.9% in the win. Notre Dame won the rebounding battle 50-43 but Pitt was able to grab 15 offensive rebounds and netted eight second chance points.
