GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Pitt softball team defeated Towson, 4-2, and fell to UMass 2-1 in day one of the Pirate Invite on the campus of East Carolina Saturday.
In the first game against UMass, freshman Becca Miller pitched a gem inside the circle for the Panthers, but the late Pitt rally fell short by one run to the Minutewomen.
Miller went six innings, giving up two hits, two earned runs, one walk and striking out five in a complete-game effort, her second of the season. Miller was perfect through four and had a no-hitter in tact through 5.1 innings.
UMass (3-3) scored in the bottom of the sixth with a two run double down the right field line from Amy Smith.
Pittsburgh (5-6) began the top of the seventh with a double from junior Hunter Levesque, and followed that hit with a single to the shortstop from sophomore Katlyn Pavlick. Senior Kaitlyn Kruger walked, loading the bases for senior Connor McGaffic.
McGaffic lined out to short, giving junior Chandler Walter a chance at the plate. Walter hit a sharp groundball to third, scoring Levesque as the third baseman stepped on the bag to get Pavlick for the second out.
Freshman Hope Alley stepped to the plate with two outs, but lined out to the pitcher to end the game.
Levesque, Pavlick and Alley each tallied a hit, while Walter recorded an RBI.
Against Towson in game number two, sophomore Abby Edwards continued where Miller left off, keeping the Towson hitters off balance and registering a career-high seven strikeouts.
Kruger opened the scoring in the bottom of the first for Pitt, singling to left field and bringing in Levesque for an early 1-0 lead.
In the next half inning, the Tigers tied it up at one with a sac fly. The Panthers regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as freshman Kayla Lane singled through the left side for her first career hit. After a sac bunt from sophomore Hannah Bach moved Lane over, junior Morgan Batesole was hit by a pitch, setting up Levesque with two on and one out.
Levesque hit a sharp single to left field, bringing in Lane. Batesole advanced home after a throwing error from the centerfielder, putting Pitt up 3-1. Levesque scored on a wild pitch from Towson, increasing the lead to 4-1.
Towson gained a run off a passed ball (4-2), but Edwards kept the Tigers at bay, getting out of the sixth and retired the side in the seventh for the victory.
Along with the seven strikeouts, Edwards gave up five hits, two runs, and one earned run in seven innings of action, earning her first win of the season.
Levesque finished 1-for-3 with two runs and a RBI, while Kruger went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Pitt ends the Pirate Invite tomorrow against host school ECU at 10 a.m.
