The three hour game saw 24 hits combined and 68 at bats between the two teams.
Maryland (2-7) struck first in the top of the first after a RBI single to left field drove in a run. Terrapin Anna Kufta stole home after Taylor Ligouri stole second, increasing the Maryland lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the first, Pittsburgh (4-5) junior LoLo Sanchez stole third and advanced home after a throwing error by the second baseman went into the dugout, making it a 2-1 game.
The Terrapins scored two more runs in the second, increasing their lead to 4-1. Pitt quickly scored in the bottom of the second, as senior Connor McGaffic hit a leadoff home run (4-2). After junior Chandler Walter, junior Morgan Batesole and junior Hunter Levesque reached base, Sanchez hit into a fielder's choice, ultimately scoring two runs and tying the game at 4-4 after a throwing error by the Terrapins.
Sophomore Katlyn Pavlick continued to swing a hot bat after recording three hits and three RBIs in two games yesterday, smacking a two RBI double off the right field wall in the bottom of the third, giving Pitt a 6-4 advantage.
In top of the fourth, Maryland tied the contest at six all, as Taylor Okada singled down the third base line, bringing in two.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 9-6 lead. Senior Kaitlyn Kruger singled, bringing in Sanchez. McGaffic reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Pavlick and freshman Hope Alley singled to centerfield, bringing in McGaffic. The nine runs scored after four innings surpassed the eight runs scored against Cal Poly (2/7) and Maryland (2/15) for a new team season best.
After a scoreless fifth, Maryland came back to tie it in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs. After holding the Panthers at bay in the bottom half of the sixth, the Terrapins took the lead after a wild pitch brought in the 19th run of the ballgame and 10th for Maryland.
In the bottom of the seventh, Maryland earned two quick outs before Batesole singled to keep the game alive. After a Levesque walk, Sanchez grounded out to third to end the game.
Pavlick finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, while McGaffic went 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and a two runs. Alley went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and run. Redshirt junior Brittany Knight pitched a complete game, her fourth of the season, striking out five and giving up seven earned runs.
Pavlick finished the ACC/B1G Challenge 5-for-12 with five RBIs, four runs, a home run and a double. Knight went 2-1 in three appearances, striking out 23 batters while pitching two complete games.
Pitt is back in action Friday, Feb. Feb. 21 against UMass at 10 a.m. in the Pirate Invite on the campus of East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. The Panthers play five games total, including two Friday, two Saturday and one Sunday.
