Second Half Struggles Cost Panthers Against #14 Florida State
2/1/2020 8:44:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PITTSBURGH – A three-pointer at the buzzer of the second quarter by Marcella Lamark tied the game at halftime but the Pitt women's basketball wasn't able to pull out the victory over #14 Florida State on Saturday evening in front of the home fans at the Petersen Events Center.
Saturday's game marked the 13th Annual Pink The Petersen Game for the Pitt women's basketball team as they honored breast cancer survivors pregame and on the court at halftime. The Panthers welcomed 165 breast cancer survivors to the game and teamed up with Susan G. Komen of Pittsburgh to donate a portion of each ticket purchased to breast cancer research.
The Panthers had a slow start to the game on Saturday evening as they fell behind the visitors 9-0 and forced Pitt to call an early timeout. After the timeout, Dayshanette Harris finished off a contested layup and the Pitt defense tightened up as the teams headed to the second quarter with Florida State leading 12-2.
Pitt came out in the second quarter with a renewed attitude and energy as they were able to score the first eight points of the quarter. Harris started the run with back-to-back triples and Rita Igbokwe finished it off with an offensive rebound and layup to cut the lead down to 12-10 three minutes into the quarter. The two teams went back-and-forth across the final six minutes of the quarter before Lamark knocked down her second triple of the quarter at the buzzer to send the teams to the locker room tied, 20-20. Pitt outscored the Seminoles 18-8 in the second quarter, the lowest scoring quarter of the season for nationally-ranked Florida State.
Harris opened up the third quarter with back-to-back jumpers to tie the game once again, 27-27, with six minutes to play but the Seminoles took over the game from there on. Right after the Harris jumper, Florida State went on a 9-0 run to force a Pitt timeout and they closed the quarter with a fast break layup to take the 43-31 lead into the final frame.
The Pitt offense couldn't get it going in the final quarter as the Seminoles pushed their lead out to as many as 29. Gabbie Green closed out the scoring in the final quarter with back-to-back jumpers as the Seminoles secured the 66-41 road victory over Pitt.
The Panthers were led offensively by Harris for the fourth straight game as she netted 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists while connecting on two three-pointers for the first time in her Pitt career. Green scored in double figures again as she netted 12 points while Igbokwe chipped in with four points, a team-high nine rebounds and five blocks across 22 minutes of work.
As a team, the Panthers shot just 24.6% from the field while the Seminoles finished off the win shooting 36.8% overall and 29.2% from behind the arc. Pitt turned the ball over 15 times and the Seminoles scored 15 points off of those turnovers while the visitors also won the fast break scoring category, 18-6.
