Panthers Earn First Win of 2020 Fall Season
PITTSBURGH – Behind a career performance by senior captain outside hitter Kayla Lund, the No. 11 Pitt volleyball team (1-2, 1-2 ACC) earned its first win of the season by defeating Boston College (0-3, 0-3 ACC), 3-1, at Fitzgerald Field House Friday night.
The Panthers earned the victory by scores of 25-9, 19-25, 25-18, 25-19. It was Pitt's 35th win in a row when playing at Fitzgerald Field House – a streak dating back to Oct. 22, 2017.
Lund had a career-best 25 kills in the match, hitting .348. She is the first Panther to record 25 or more kills since Nika Markovic had 26 at WKU on Sept. 8, 2017.
Junior middle blocker Sabrina Starks tied her career best with 10 kills on a career-best hitting percentage of .769 (10-0-13). She added five blocks for the Panthers. Senior utility player Chinaza Ndee led Pitt with six blocks while posting eight kills.
In a starting role, sophomore Ashley Browske contributed a career-best 19 digs. Sophomore setter Lexis Akeo tied a career best with 14 digs and added 20 assists. Redshirt senior setter Kylee Levers led the Panthers with 22 assists.
Pitt had the upper hand on the stat sheet in hitting percentage (.288-.129) kills (58-36), assists (51-33), service aces (8-5) and digs (58-38). Boston College had more blocks (11.0-9.0).
WITH THE WIN…
Set One: No. 11 Pitt 25, Boston College 9
Pitt found its footing with an early 8-0 run to secure momentum, up 9-2. The Panthers gained a double-figure lead on a 4-0 run to go up, 18-7. Another 4-0 run extended the margin to 22-8, and sealed the deal with a 3-1 run. Pitt hit a scorching .522 for the frame, led by six kills from Lund. The Panthers limited Boston College to a negative hitting percentage (-.148), with just three kills compared to Pitt's 15.
Set Two: Boston College 25, No. 11 Pitt 19
It was a slower start for Pitt in the second frame, with an opening 4-1 run for the Eagles. Despite cutting its deficit to just one point, 12-1, the Panthers were unable to surmount the margin and fell, 25-19. Boston College held Pitt to .235 hitting for the set while posting a percentage of .345, tying the match at one set apiece.
Set Three: No. 11 Pitt 25, Boston College 18
The third set brought some momentum back for the Panthers, who gained an early 8-5 lead. BC cut the lead to 13-12 following a 4-1 run, but Pitt was able to recover with a 4-0 run to make it 20-14. The end of the frame was closer, but the Panthers held on to go up 2-1 with a 25-18 win. Pitt hit just .207 in the set, but held Boston College to .147.
Set Four: No. 11 Pitt 25, Boston College 19
It was a battle in the fourth set, with 11 ties and two lead changes. Pitt started to pull away with a 16-13 lead. Lund's career-best 25th kill brought up set point for Pitt, 24-19, and the match ended on a BC attacking error, with the Panthers on top, 3-1.
