In 13 seasons under head coach Dan Fisher, Pitt volleyball has risen to unprecedented success, garnering seven ACC Championships over a nine year span (2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), the program’s first six NCAA Elite Eight appearances (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025) and the university’s first five NCAA Division I Women’s Final Four appearances (2021,2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).

In short: Fisher knows how to win.

His 13 seasons at Pitt have brought about winning at a scale nearly unheard of in collegiate volleyball. With a winning percentage of .825 (350-74), Fisher is just the eighth head coach with a winning percentage over .800 in his first 10 seasons of Division I Women's Volleyball and the first coach to accomplish the feat in the 21st century. He joins a list of legendary coaches that includes: Dave Shoji (Hawaii), Terry Pettit (Nebraska), Russ Rose (PSU), Don Shaw (Stanford), Andy Banachowski (UCLA), John Dunning (Pacific) and Mick Haley (Texas and USC). All seven coaches are AVCA Hall of Fame members.

Combining the last five seasons (2021-25), Pitt has won more matches than any other NCAA Division I women’s volleyball program, with 153 victories.

In April 2026, Fisher signed a contract extension that ensures his leadership of the Panthers through at least the 2031 season, as announced by Director of Athletics Allen Greene.

A five-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) East Region Coach Region of the Year (2017, 2018, 2022, 2024, 2025) and three-time ACC Coach of the Year (2017, 2018, 2024), Fisher has elevated the Panthers to new heights. He has guided the team to the NCAA Tournament more than any coach in program history (2016-25). He was instrumental in Pitt’s bid to host NCAA Volleyball Tournament matches at the Petersen Events Center (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025), and led the Panthers to their highest ranking and NCAA Tournament seed in program history at No. 1 in 2024. Most recently, Fisher guided Pitt to its longest NCAA Tournament run in program history, reaching the Final Four in five straight seasons (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).

He secured the highest ranked wins in program history in 2022, taking down AVCA No. 2 ranked Louisville in five sets inside Fitzgerald Field House on Oct. 23 before coming back to defeat No. 2 Wisconsin in the Regional Final at the UW Field House in Madison, Wisc. on Dec. 10. The Panthers became the first team in NCAA Tournament history to defeat the defending national champion on their home court in a Regional Final match. Over his 13 seasons at Pitt he has amassed a 27-10 postseason record.

Prior to his tenure at Pitt, the program had won just one match over a Top 10 ranked opponent (1-44) and was 10-100 when playing against teams in the Top 25. Over the last 13 seasons, the Panthers are 27-20 vs. Top 10 and 66-38 vs. Top 25. Pitt has had more wins against Top 10 ranked teams over the past three seasons (13) than wins over Top 25 teams in the program's 39 seasons before Fisher took over. In 2022, the Panthers set a record with five wins over Top 5 ranked opponents, becoming the first program in the history of Pitt Athletics to do so in a single season (at No. 7 BYU, vs. No. 5 Ohio State, at No. 10 Georgia Tech, vs. No. 2 Louisville and at No. 2 Wisconsin). Pitt met that mark once against in 2024 (at No. 10 Oregon, vs. No. 3 Penn State, vs. No. 5 Stanford, vs. No. 4 Louisville and at No. 3 Louisville) and recorded the highest win percentage (0.833) against those opponents in program history.

An accomplished coach at every level of the game, Fisher’s coaching resume includes an NAIA National Championship at Concordia (2012) with two national title match appearances (2011, 2012). Additionally, he earned a gold medal with Team USA at the 2015 Pan Am Games and at the U21 Pan Am Cup in the summer of 2022. Over the last 20 years his involvement with USA Volleyball has been extensive, ranging from his time as a player (2000, 2001), to an assistant coach (2006, 2007, 2012) to a head coach (2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022).

Led the U.S. Women’s National Team to a Gold Medal at the Pan American Games as head coach – marked the first time since 1967 (2015)
Aided in Team USA’s Gold Medal run as an assistant coach at the Pan American Cup – aced as the team’s offensive coordinator, specifically working with the setters, and also coordinated opponent scouting (2012)
Served as an assistant for Team USA during the World University Games in Thailand (2007)
Assisted with the USA Volleyball Boys Youth Select program (2006)

University of Hawaii | Associate Men's Head Coach | 2009-11

Helped the Warriors earn a No. 4 national ranking in 2010 and coached three AVCA All-Americans during his tenure

University of San Francisco | Associate Women's Head Coach | 2007-09

Helped San Francisco to an NCAA Tournament berth after finishing second in the West Coast Conference in 2008

University of the Pacific | Assistant Men's Head Coach | 2004-07

Worked primarily with the men’s squad but did additional work with the women’s team (assistant coach/camp director)

Playing Career

Spent five years playing professionally in Belgium, Spain and Switzerland after college graduation
Competed for five years on the AVP Professional Beach Volleyball Tour earning a pair of 13th place finishes
Represented his country on multiple occasions donning the red, white and blue during tournaments in Japan and France in 2000 and 2001

Education

Earned a Master of Arts in sports science from Pacific in 2008
Earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from the University of the Pacific in May 1999

A native of Santa Barbara, Calif., Fisher resides in Pittsburgh with his wife Joni, daughter Eden and son Max

Favorite place on the University of Pittsburgh campus?
- Schenley Plaza.
Favorite sports moment at Pitt?
- Winning three consecutive ACC Volleyball Championships, as well as setting the program’s attendance record against Louisville at the Petersen Events Center in 2023.
What is your favorite thing to do in the city of Pittsburgh?
- I love to play disc golf.
What do you love most about the University of Pittsburgh?
- I love how happy the students are and how they embrace our campus, as well as all the great things there are to do in the city.
What is your favorite aspect of working in Pitt’s athletic department?
- I have a great staff and love the comradery with other coaches.
What do you love most about working in athletics?
- Helping others be successful.

Hobbies outside of work?
- Spending time with my daughter and son, guitar/ukulele, reading and almost anything outdoors.
