Panthers Head Back To Blacksburg For Hokie Invitational

PITTSBURGH – For the second straight weekend, the University of Pittsburgh track and field teams will be heading down to Blacksburg, Va. to compete in the Hokie Invitational at the Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus. Pitt will be sending a total of 25 student-athletes to the meet that will begin on Friday afternoon and conclude on Saturday afternoon.

SCOUTING THE FIELD
- There will be a total of 13 teams competing in the Hokie Invitational including five ACC schools.
- The schools include Virginia Tech (host), Virginia, North Carolina, NC State, Pitt, UNC Charlotte, North Carolina A&T, Elon, East Carolina, High Point, Radford, Georgetown and VCU.
- The meet will begin for the Panthers on Friday afternoon at 5:00 pm as Jordan Fields and Taylor Middleton will compete in the women's triple jump. Action will come to an end on Friday night at 8:35 pm with the men's 300m dash.
- On Saturday, Lydia Bottelier and Breanna Phillips will open things up in the high jump at 12:00 pm. The meet will wrap up at 4:10 pm on Saturday with the men's 4x400m relay.
- The Panthers competed in the Virginia Tech Invitational last weekend and posted two victories and eight top-10 all-time marks throughout the weekend.
- Senior Shyheim Wright opened things up for Pitt with a victory in the 60m hurdles as he crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 7.84 seconds, the fourth fastest time in program history. Wright then went on to take fifth place in the 200m dash with a new personal best time of 22.49 seconds.
- The other Panther to collect a victory was Nikki Scherer who took home first place in the 500m dash with a personal best time of 1:12.59.
- The Panthers throw squad had four student-athletes post top-10 all-time marks on the weekend led by Noah Walker who took home second place in the weight throw with a heave of 65'1.25" (19.84m), the second best throw in program history in the event. Abena Atuobi notched a fifth place finish in the shot put with the third best toss in program history while freshman Laurel Kun posted the ninth best throw in program history in the shot put. Freshman Shannah Mallett had the seventh best throw in program history in the women's weight throw, a heave that traveled 55'5.75" (16.91m).
- Eddita Pessima continued her strong start to her season as she notched a fifth place finish while posting a personal best time of 8.44 seconds in the prelims, the fifth fastest in program history.
- The men's distance medley relay squad of Drew Glick, Jack Wisner, Jack Balick and Nick Wolk took home second place with a time of 9:56.74, the eighth fastest time in program history.
WHERE THEY RANK
- Pitt currently has 18 men who rank in the top-10 in the ACC in their respective events.
- Three Panthers lead the ACC in their respective event as Drew Glick currently holds the fastest time in the 800m with a time of 1:50.79, Nick Wolk leads the 5000m with a time of 14:17.36 and Greg Lauray is the leader in the high jump with a mark of 2.16m.
- On the women's side, Pitt has a total of 16 women who rank inside the top-10 in the ACC in their respective events.
- Nikki Scherer currently ranks second in the conference in the 400m dash with a time of 54.28 seconds while also ranking fourth in the ACC in the 200m dash with a time of 24.31 seconds. Pitt also has four other student-athletes who rank inside the top-10 in the 400m dash with Breanna Phillips (third), Alexis Leech (fourth), Nina Crawford (sixth) and Monica McNeil (eighth).
- Sophomore Brenda Ayuk currently is ranked in the top-seven in a pair of events including the mile run (fifth) and 800m dash (seventh). Eddita Pessima also ranks sixth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.44 seconds, a personal best mark that also ranks as the fifth fastest in program history.
- The women's 4x400m relay quartet of Flora Ahiarakwe, Nina Crawford, Breanna Phillips, and Nikki Scherer are currently ranked second in the ACC with their 3:45.01 finish at the Nittany Lion Challenge.
- The Panthers are headed back to University Park, PA for a second time this month as they will compete in the Penn State National Open from Friday, Jan. 31 to Saturday Feb. 1. They will be competing in the Multi-Sport Facility/Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
