Wright Takes Home Gold In 60m Hurdles For Second Straight Week

BLACKSBURGH, VA – For the second straight weekend, the Pitt track and field teams competed in Blacksburg, Va. this time taking part in the Hokie Invitational with a total of 13 teams in attendance.
The star for the Panthers for the second straight weekend was senior Shyheim Wright as he was able to collect another win in the 60m hurdles. Wright opened up the competition with a strong run in the 60m hurdles preliminary round as he qualified in first place with a time of 7.92 seconds. The senior saved his best run for the finals as he set a new personal best time of 7.81 seconds, the fourth fastest in program history, as he claimed the victory over the strong field. He notched the win by .18 seconds over the second place finishers, his best performance of the season to date.
In the women's 60m hurdles, sophomore Eddita Pessima continued her strong start to the season as she was able to claim a fifth place finish in the finals with a new personal best time of 8.37 seconds, tied for the third fastest time in program history and the fifth fastest this season in the ACC. Pessima then notched a fifth place finish in the 200m dash with a personal best time of 24.52 seconds.
In the field competitions, freshman Lydia Bottelier had her best leap of her collegiate career in the high jump as she took home second place. The second place leap cleared a height of 5'5.00" (1.68m), the ninth best high jump in program history. Senior Taylor Middleton notched her best long jump of the season to secure third place as she posted a leap of 19'7.75" (6.03m). She back that up with a sixth place finish in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 38'6.50" (11.78m) while fellow senior Jordan Fields collected fifth place with season-best jump of 38'8.00" (11.83m).
On the track, junior Monica McNeil had a great run in the women's 600m final as she collected a fourth place finish with a personal record time of 1:35.80 while sophomore Sydni Townsend finished in seventh place in the same race in 1:36.66. In the 300m dash, Nikki Scherer posted a personal record time of 38.98 seconds as she took home seventh place overall. On the men's side, Lonzell Feagin posted a season-best time of 21.94 seconds to claim eighth place in the 200m dash while freshman Raymond Oriakhi notched an eighth place finish with a personal record time of 1:23.10.
In the relays, the Pitt women's 4x400m relay quartet of Flora Ahiarakwe, Breanna Phillips, Sydni Townsend and Nikki Scherer had a great run as they collected second place with a season-best time of 3:43.05. On the men's side, the team of Lonzell Feagin, Matthew Thompson, Matt Wilson and Raymond Oriakhi notched a fourth place finish in 3:18.16.
The Panthers will return to the track next weekend as they head to University Park, Pa. to compete in the Penn State National Open at the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Competition will begin on Friday, Jan. 31 at around 4:00 pm and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 1 at around 5:20 pm.
